What causes a person to develop a bad temper? [I Hated My Childhood]

My mother had a terrible temper, easily triggered by almost any little thing. I walked on eggs in her presence. You could never really tell what might set her off. She once threw a chair across a restaurant because she mistakenly believed the waitress had brought salad dressing (on a lazy Susan) when she hadn't ordered it. During their marriage (which ended in divorce) she beat up my dad and sent him to an Emergency hospital three times.

How do people get that way? Have you ever known anyone like my mother?
cherokeepatti61-69, F
My father was that way. I don鈥檛 know if he had a genetic predisposition towards psychopathy or if it was because his mother doted on him, he was her first-born son. I think whenever one child is doted on at the expense of the others that it sets them up for severe personality disorders that last a lifetime.

@CestManan No. He died at 80.
greenmountaingal70-79, F
@cherokeepatti My mother grew up favored strongly over her sibling, a half sister. Maybe that was a factor.
cherokeepatti61-69, F
@greenmountaingal yes I believe that it gives the doted on child a false sense of power and results in narcissism. The family dynamic is very important

No coping skills. She needed to learn somewhere along the line that that鈥檚 not okay.
assemblingaknob26-30, F
@SW-User I never thought about that
curiosi61-69, F
My mother was like that. Her parents spoiled her miserably. I remember once she was assaulting her step mother. My grandfather just stood there saying "Please be nice".
She never grew up, emotionally she remains an angry 3 year old.
curiosi61-69, F
@CestManan 5 feet tall, and extremely lazy. Hates good food, eats candy, cake and cookies washed down with a diet coke.
CestManan46-50, F
@curiosi the stereotypical Diet Coke. My roommate's mom is probably about 5 feet tall and close to 500 pounds. She seems okay though from what little I've talked to her but when I do look at her I think, how does her heart not just explode?
greenmountaingal70-79, F
@CestManan Mom lived to be 94. Being old did not make her any worse.

I've been wondering why I have one myself 馃槥.
CestManan46-50, F
@Rose0415 because you have a chemical imbalance and you need to get on medication.

attack is the best defense mechanism. My mother is like that as well.

Being surrounded by morons. Unfortunately mine is degenerating day by day, this year in particular.

But never to the point of releasing my frustrations on those who don't deserve it.

Being born Scottish is one way.. Being in lockdown for over three months with one is another.馃樂
greenmountaingal70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman If I'd ever been in lockdown with my perpetually angry mother it would've literally killed me. The Scots are strong people; hang in there.
whowasthatmaskedman70-79, M
@greenmountaingal Thanks.. We have been covid case free for a week now..Soon I hope to be able to take a drive out of town and look for a place to bury the body...馃樂

starts from childhood and how family treats/reacts with each other.

Sorry about your Mom. I just forgive people.
YMITheWayIM46-50, M
A personality disorder in this case. I think reasons aren't usually that sinister in most cases.
CestManan46-50, F
In the bowels of Hell there is this demon named Karen. Sometimes this demon affects certain people.
Momma says a alligator is ornery because he鈥檚 got all them teef.. and no toofbrush
CestManan46-50, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout How come ornery and honorable sound similar yet mean totally the opposite?
HairbrushDiva31-35, F
Being provoked, usually.
greenmountaingal70-79, F
@HairbrushDiva So you blame in on the victim for behaving badly?
HairbrushDiva31-35, F
@greenmountaingal No, I just answered your question "What causes a person to develop a bad temper?"
SpoiledbratF
Doesr she take a lot of risks? Or is it just the anger?
Hard to say. Sometimes when it鈥檚 an older person it can be a feature of dementia. But if she was always that way it could鈥檝e been anything from mental or emotional disturbance to the result of her own experiences growing up. 馃檨
