A tornado that twisted through our neighborhood when I was in HS. It destroyed one house completely, damaged several others, downed a ton of enormous trees, and then the army came in to help...and made another mess.
PhoenixPhail · M
The 1½-mile-wide, F3 tornado that ripped through Nashville in 1998. My neighborhood was a disaster area.
There were large trees in my neighborhood that weren't even FROM my neighborhood.

@PhoenixPhail I was in a truckstop just outside of town that day, i got angry because my weather radio kept going off so i got up and unplugged it and went back to sleep in my truck and slept through the whole thing LOL

Woke me from a deep sleep.
We had weather usually accompanying tornado warnings, except this time the wind shook the house, and rain was driven horizontal. A white sheet of water, I couldn't see out the window. Large trees bent low like palms driven by a typhoon.
The normal space panic and fear would occupy was replaced by a dead calm, and decisive action. We were going to the basement NOW.
Though it amounted to nothing---just a severe T- storm, we live in the Tornado belt and had every reason to think it was going to hit.
Never seen anything that violent, ever.
I realize this pales far in comparison to Katrina, Ida, or recent tornadoes across the midwest.

1982, when I lived in Pacifica, CA. There was a series of storms in the beginning of the year that caused mudslides in the hills. Where I lived was spared, but some homes slid down into a canyon, and lives were lost.
In 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake caused damage and deaths throughout the Bay Area.

Whichever was the worst of dozens of blizzards I've been through. I've been in a hurricane, but it wasn't a very powerful one. I was also like 30 feet from a tree that got hit by lightning once.

@SW-User a proper nor-easterly is nothing to take lightly.. rapid snowfall, unrelenting winds, visibility down to zero, it's wild!

@SW-User hahah! so true! 😂
Worst flood on record for the area.
Animals, cars, houses, and people washed down river and drowned.
People made homeless.
Afterwards, the mop up, people getting sick from the flood waters.
Fences down and stock wandering everywhere.
Roads damaged and impassible.
So much so that a year later, the road repairs are still in progress.
Shops lost all their goods.
Insurance would not pay up.
Many businesses died. Many are still struggling to recover.
This has happened twice in the last sixteen years.
The increase in frequency likely to continue with global warming.

My county gets more federal disaster aid than any other in the USA (or did a few years ago, I don't know about recently)...we've had floods, hail storms, wildfires, very destructive micro burst storms, ice storms, and I don't know how many tornadoes in this county, 3 F-5 tornadoes and several smaller ones. The worst damage to my house was from a micro burst storm. We've also had 3 med size earthquakes and lots of weaker ones.

Been through three hurricanes, a few tropical storms, ate dinner while a tornado hit a town in Kansas while I was eating but the worst weather disasters I have dealt with have been snowstorms, spent a day and a half stranded on the highway in one and three days stuck in a truckstop in the other.

Yeah, it was when I was much much younger and I had a friend sleeping over. My mom made us get in the hall on top of a mattress and then put another mattress over top of us. It was pretty terrifying.

@hartfire I was living in South West outskirts of Melbourne at the time it was like the four horsemen rode over our sky, we did not see a blue sky with white clouds, the whole sky was peach orange and as you described the sun was blood red and the only clouds in the sky was the black smoke from the fires which surrounded Melbourne from Mt Dandenong, Kinglake, both interstate highways M31 and M79 were closed off no one could get in or out because even the fire spread across the whole northern outskirts too.
@SW-User Relieved for you that you were not one of the people living in the fire's path.
Even so, it was horrible to see people's devastated lives. I had to close my mind to the fates of the livestock, wildlife, and beloved pets -- it was too painful to contemplate.
The improvements to early warning systems and emergency services strategies and resources are a good start.
But I wonder why we don't hear more about mandatory adoption of the Aborigines' technique of using small grass fires in cool, slightly damp weather to burn off in a patchwork pattern. It renewed fertility, reduced the build-up of dried vegetative fuels, and our temperate ecosystems have evolved to need that treatment in order to thrive.

@hartfire I had a family friend who lost everything in amongst those fires. All of Marysville and the black spur perished in flames. They were dodging fireballs, literally.
