Nostalgic walk.

My daughter and I went for a walk today through the woods near where I grew up and visited a couple of places I visited a lot as a child with my Dad and the family dog. Its a long time since i've been up there and there have been a lot of houses built on route, but the woods themselves were easy to nagvigate and I found my 'special places' with ease. At the very top of the hill is a watchtower, believed to have been built in 17th century, but its unsure by whom. Us local kids would walk up there in the summer with picnics and spend hours there. Today in the glorious sunshine the tower looked as majestic and mysterious as ever and was being guarded by a flock of sheep with impressive horns.
The other spot we visited is one of my favourite places overlooking my hometown with stunning views of the coast and hills. I always think of Sunday morning walks with Dad and my dog Tim.
It was a lovely day!

Reminds me of The Hill near Hobbiton.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@JoyfulSilence we have to walk through lots of woodland to get to our tower. When i was little, you could see it from the road. I could actually see it from my sisters bedroom window in winter when the trees shed, but now you cant see it til ya get there!

Beautiful area! Devon?

Might the watch-tower have been an estate folly rather than built for any military purpose?

As was the Smedmore tower at Kimmeridge, on the Dorset coast, though I think that dates from the 18th Century.

@ArishMell North Wales
🙂

They believe it was built in 17th century, possibly built by land owners as a look out for pirates!!

I forgot to point out the history of the viewing point looking over the town ( if yr interested....lol)
There was a TB hospital in the woods....(no trace of the building now but my brother once took me around the abandoned buldings when i was about 9....one of the scariest but exciting experiences of my life....but... thats another story) and on this spot was a large glass conservatory where the patients would be taken in wheelchairs and beds to take in the fresh air. In thise days, they believed good quality air was helpful in treating TB. When I began going up there aged about 4,(early 70s) the ground was covered in glass and the old air raid shelter was still there.....it still is! Is clear and glassfree these days and there are now benches to sit on and enjoy the stunning views.
