Always have to look for new friends on my walks

My dog and I ran into this young western cottonmouth on the trail a few minutes ago. I used a stick to chase it into the woods before two more dogs got there. My dog ignores snakes. Others might not be so lucky.

I bet its bite packs quite a punch.

@Sapio Yes. My grandfather was bitten on the leg when he was a teenager and they soaked his leg in a bucket of turpentine for a week to fight the venom and swelling. Treatment is a lot better now. They hardly ever bite unless you provoke it, such as by kicking it like my grandfather did.
