It's part of the Royal Commonwealth. Australia, originally known as New South Wales was first established as a prison colony under rule of the British Empire at the time.

@originnone Yes it is.
originnone · 61-69, M
@Sidewinder Did they get to play?
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@originnone I don't know, I haven't seen the Eurovision Contest.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Aussies have some talented singers Kylie Minogue, Andrew Stockdale, Guy Sebastian.
I'm sure Eurovision wants a sampling of that. And Australia technically has European heritage. Albanese himself is of Italian descent.

@Longpatrol I like some of Kylie's songs, especially this one:

@Longpatrol And bands like AC/DC, INXS, Men At Work, and Split Enz, to name a few.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Sidewinder I'm not into those bands at all. AC/DC are too loud and strident for my taste. I only know one Men At Work song, it's called "Down Under" and it's awful. I only know one Split Enz song and I didn't think that was anything special either. I've heard one or two INXS songs but I'm still not keen.
Here are some singers from Australia that I do like (apart from Kylie):

And, of course, not forgetting Kylie's sister:

Apparently it was supposed to be a one off to celebrate Eurovision s 60th anniversary.
Apparently Morocco competed in 1980.
I agree that it's not right. Eurovision isn't what it was.

If Australia won the contest, they would host it next I guess. If so would it be on tv here at 8am instead?
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@carolinehugz Interesting guess, but I doubt if it's the real reason.
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
Australia has been competing in the Eurovision Song Contest since 2015.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@Jacko1971 But why? I don't see how it qualifies.
ArtieKat · M
I know! When Israel was allowed in I thought WTF......
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
There was the song in the late 70s that sounded like
I Want To Be A Polar Bear.
I Want To Be A Polar Bear.
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@ArtieKat the Jews literally came from the EU so that the EU can not have Jews.
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
The Eurovision Song Contest has no connection with the British Commonwealth- weird how some here think it does 🙂🐼🥢
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
Nobody knows. And English people aren't European at all.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@Roundandroundwego How so? 🤔
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@MaryJo1996 I'm being facetious. The Brexit and all. Not being you while being you.
SW-User
this is my best guess, and i'm not kidding at all... it's because the accents are similar
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
@SW-User I don't think so.
For the same reason a random country like Israel was I gues......
Roundandroundwego · 61-69
@BritishFailedAesthetic the Jews randomly all came from Europe so Europe could not have Jews.

I remember saying the same thing to my friend last year when I saw Australia was in it.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Is that like the Gong Show? (I'm old. Sue me.)
