Why was Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest?

Australia is nowhere near Europe.

Apparently it was supposed to be a one off to celebrate Eurovision s 60th anniversary.

Apparently Morocco competed in 1980.

I agree that it's not right. Eurovision isn't what it was.
