You know I have very strong feelings on this topic. I've been working in and among the capitals of Europe for years now as part of the American presense there. I am greatly sadened by the changes in American attitudes and support coming out of Washington.
But while I hate the way this is happening, if the end result is European unity and self defense, then I think this will be good for Europe and good for the world. It is my hope that as we transition from the post-war (post WWII) global world order to this new order, that we in the western world can remain friends.

@ElwoodBlues It's not even appeasement, they're literally aligned with Putin

Notice how even China is more neutral right now 🙈 absolutely wild, mostly expected, but wild

@sarabee1995 you weren't friends.

I remember when the CDU/CSU were considered the right wingers.
I shared a hostel room with two Germans in 1981. I think Thatcher and Reagan had both been in power for a year or so.
The Germans were extremely pessimisitic about the prospect of CDU/CSU getting into power at their next election, won by Helmut Kohl in 1982.
How times have changed 😕

I do wonder if Trump thinks the Union is also fascist, like MAGA and the AfD, because they're conservative.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
And he will now try to form a coalition with the outgoing chancellor's SPD. When Trump realises they are cooperating to keep the Musk-backed AfD out of the picture, I think he is going to be bigly displeased 😬

German people understand that they can't exit from the war and austerity, so they don't even have a left! Just like the USA.
I'm loving it for ya. Austerity and wars that discredited you forever! Everyone looking! Yum.

Did those far right guys get in too though? Their leader has been made deputy.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@Elessar Ah okay. Perhaps it was misreported.

@WintaTheAngle No. The AfD party came second in the voting, and they "got in" parliament alright, but that doesn't mean they will be forming part of the government. It doesn't work like that in Germany.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@SW-User Yes Elessar said so.

Merz does not share Trump's view. He ripped him a new one during his first address to Germans.

SW-User
Scary that the far right is second place
Elessar · 31-35, M
@SW-User Look at who's governing my country 😬

SW-User
@Elessar she even has blonde hair and blue eyes ...guess i won't be visiting italy any time soon
Elessar · 31-35, M
@SW-User We have two far-rightwing parties here: the current one that is actually old-school nationalist (descending from the Movimento Sociale, and thus descending directly from Mussolini's leftovers), the other that is our MAGA-like option where they parade themselves as "nationalists" and "patriotic" but in reality are only nationalists and patriotic if you look at them from a Russian perspective.
I'll never vote for any of the two in this lifetime or the next, but considering the other was at something like 40% in the polls not too long ago (2019?), I'd rather have her in charge. At least they're pro-Ukraine, in favor of increasing the defense budget, in favor of developing nuclear energy, and at least for now acting mostly as a centre-right party (at least in international/EU matters; they still suck from a social (or "internal") point of view i.e. minority rights, wealth equality / taxation, etc. but better than sucking at both I guess)
