What is your 'Whew, that was close' moment?

DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Back in college, I had a car that I loved, but it was an old piece of crap. Driving between my parent's house and home, a car did something stupid in front of me and I had to stand on the brakes to avoid an accident.

Nothing too unusual about that. However, when I got back to town, I was coming along to a stop light, which was red. I stepped on the brake pedal and felt a pop like standing on a water balloon — and I wasn't slowing down. I had about a second before I was about to plow into the tail end of a car at the stop light. Fortunately, the right-turn lane was clear, and it went into a road that went slightly uphill. I hit the turn lane, headed up the uphill street, turned into a parking lot and coasted until the car came to a stop.

I think it was 1989. My wife was staying late at work, some function or something. She worked in the east of the city of London. I worked at Bank. I went out for a drink (as I did every day in those days) after work. I met her about 11pm near Monument Station. We ran down the stairs to the platform there was a tube waiting. I ran to hold the doors but as they started to close I totally misjudged the distance and the gap between the train and the platform.

Both feet first I went straight down between the train and the platform. My wife screamed. A huge South African guy forced the door opened and dragged me on board. Suit ripped, cuts all over me along with goodness knows what else, it was filthy down there.

Looking back if no one had seen me and that train had moved... Well I'd have been crushed.

Bloody hell.....what a horrible thing to happen. Easily done though, those gaps are plenty big enough. @SW-User

A friend and I had booked to go to Sri Lanka and had planned to travel down the coastal road the day the Tsunami hit. The day before we were due to fly out, our hotel booking over New Year had been double-booked so we went to Istanbul instead.
There for the grace of God!

Back in the early 80s, my girlfriend (at the time) and I were driving along a mountain road in New Mexico. She was driving and I guess going a bit too fast for the turn as we started skidding on some gravel. The car was heading for a cliff. We obviously stopped before going over, but that was quite scary.

Phew, glad you made it out of there.@sciguy18

The sound of rifle shells whizzing past my head. Not sure how close they were, but it’s a sound (and experience) I won’t forget.

For reference, this happened *before* I was in the military - I would have expected it there.

Wow. You were lucky not to have been hit. @SW-User

OK, I was exaggerating. But when I think of all the times when I came close to death, it was usually while trying to avoid being hit by a car!

Being caught with the wrong sister
