I had a one question exam like that once. Write a brief history of the United States from 1865 to present naming all the presidents, major national and international events that affected the US, and any important legislation.

That’s quite a list of instructions. Probably need to provide assistance to help explaining each item to the students. Wouldn’t want to confuse them even more.

Wow! I did have one engineering professor that allowed one page of handwritten notes for an exam. He figured that we would know the material we put on the page, so it was okay.

Yeah, our material science take home exam at christmas was one question: Tell me everything about steel.

My answer was a two hundred page hand typed book with citations.

That along tells you you need more than just 6 hours especially if you have to use mathematics which you probably do to prove your point
