Completely agree. Smart phones makes kids ,in particular, lazy. Never learn how to do it themselves. Externalizing everything to web searches is not conducive to survival or DIY. Flip phone? Np for communication and emergencies.

It's interesting that the schools don't want the kids to have cell phones, but its okay for the schools to indoctrinate our children what sex they are supposed to be...
We give to much power to schools and government over what is right for our children as parents...

Problem... you need a "smartphone" to download the app that you need to get on the bus to get to school in the first place - or you're walking the 4 mile round trip since they demolished our local high school.
Someone will have to start manufacturing a brick phone that still works now that the 1G network is dismantled. Also how are they going to use the school's apps without an app enabled phone? Perhaps simply turning it off when not needed for school is enough.

@NerdyPotato The problem is that schools aren't really blanket enforcing their own rules on mobile phones.
Where they are confiscated, they aren't always stored in a secure location, so they get stolen.
As for the part about schools' apps... some children can't even get to school without using a smart phone to access an app to scan a QR code just to get on the bus every morning. We might have gone card free, but it wasn't to the benefit of education itself.

No cell phones permitted anymore at all in a lot of school systems across the US. That's expected to expand.

@masterofyou Have you ever heard of safety??? It's usually where they turn out ALL the lights so it's nice and dark and the shooter can't see which rooms are in use and which are empty.... and usually, the child should be trained in such tactics (though it's a shame that the same can't be said for their parents and grandparents).

@HootyTheNightOwl You can turn the brightness of the phone down ...... Most schools have requirements for lock down drills but it seems everytime a shooting happens they find out the school in question was delinquent in having the drills....

@masterofyou Hell knows.. I didn't make these policies.

In fact, fck it, let's go all out!
Children's cellphones cannot be connected to the internet, may only be plugged in to use, and have to use a rotary dialer.
This will prevent misbehavior, as well as protect against any potential Cylon attacks.
The alternative would just be to be responsible parents.

Cellphones should be banned in all schools
If they can't bring guns and knifes to school. Why are cellphones allowed
