Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Kids are so pampered nowadays . I went to a private all boys boarding school and we did it totally nude and had to shower after . The showers were just a big room with shower heads on the wall every few feet .
Our kids today are being raised wrapped in cotton wool and turned into papmpered spoilt brats .
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Rhode57 No - they are being treated with respect...
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@ArishMell Really respect . Their pampered . We are told not to shout at them or tell them off in case they get upset . They have taken all the oldfashioned play things out of parks in case they get hurt . Their told to wear helmets and padding when riding a bicycle in case they fall and hurt themselves I could go on but I think I have made my point . You can give them respect without pampering them . Kids learn by their mistakes but we dont allow them to do so . Kids are suffering more and more with allergies and such like because their not allowed to build immunity to things . We are coddling them and doing them no favours . Kids need to be able to spread their wings make mistakes and mature as they do . Yes their gonna have accidents , make mistakes maybe break a bone or 2 its all part of life and growing up .

@Rhode57 I see your point but I think you exaggerate - and it's we adults too whom the cotton-wool types aim at!

The difficulty I think is teaching children and grown-ups how to do hazardous things while minimising the risk of being hurt by them, without going too far.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
I would kick seven shades of shite out of any teacher who strip searched my nephew or nieces.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I don't think that is the point the school is making, and I don't think Metro understands it.

Nowt to do with "posh". That's just Metro being snobbish.

That little quote alone shows a school rightly wanting to protect an expensive new floor from being damaged by children cavorting about on it in inappropriate footwear. Ordinary foot traffic fine, games and PE, not fine. After all, many householders now ask their own family and visitors to leave outdoor shoes and stiletto-heels by the front door. And you always take your shoes off when entering a mosque even as a visitor: school, home or mosque the aim is to respect and protect the property for its users.

I don't understand why that news-site gets its bloomers in a twist about it: must be short of genuine news. It's not some major act of "institutional" cruelty to children here; but one school's internal decision to protect its taxpayer-funded assets for the benefit of its real users: the staff and children.

As for PE footwear or lack thereof, your schools may have gone bare-footed for indoor PE but mine didn't. In fact until I started seeing all these reminiscences on SW I had no idea anyone did any PE in bare feet - though I cannot recall if we wore shoes or not in my Infants' School for the Music & Movement schools-broadcasts in the early-1960s.

I''d never even heard of the practice!

Otherwise I and my class-mates always wore plimsolls for all PE and Games, indoors and out; except of course studded boots for football on the outdoor pitches.

Nope we didn’t. We had to wear soft-sole shoes on the gym floor back then. And due to the male athletes getting preference we usually didn’t even do anything till the last 5 minutes of class. I think the gym teachers were in the teachers lounge taking a 45 minute break after roll call, it was right across from the auditorium-gym. Happened in high school PE too.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@cherokeepatti that’s really poor!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Hayleywg We had to buy uniforms, ugly ass uniforms, change into them, had to pay for a lock fee and towel fee, didn’t work out to need a shower but a handful of times during the school year, the teacher would come back the last 5 minutes and tell us to do a trivial set of exercises making us have to run when the bell rang, change our clothes and get to the next class. This happened in junior high and high school both. I don’t think PE should even be a class at this rate. And everyone who wants driver’s ed should be able to get it and not have to pay a high fee for it like now.

Parents can be a right pain in the a**e at times 😟

Why would children get cut feet on a new gym floor designed with gymnasts and dancers in mind? Only an issue if people start wearing shoes on it 🥺

I don't blame the kids for being pampered . . but some of their parents really need to grow up a bit.
QuietSophie · 26-30, F
We did PE in plimsolls, but we removed them for gymnastics, dance and drama classes. If we forgot our plimsolls we had to go barefoot.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@QuietSophie like so many schools.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
We were always bare foot when doing PR indoors.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
We wore shoes and a school uniform in my PE class
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
We were never allowed to be barefoot during PE. I went to Catholic elementary and high school. They were really strict when it came to the PE dress code.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@Barefooter25 God I hate catholics especially schools . My dad was catholic and we never got on .
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
@Rhode57 Catholic high school wasn't so bad. Elementary and junior high was a totally different story. From my impression, teachers were only interested in strict discipline than education and majority of kids there were total douches.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Barefooter25 kids and their awkward phase
lizzielost · F
Yes, most of my PE classes were done in bare feet. In secondary school you could wear non-marking shoes in the gym for team games, but many of us chose not to.

How can a floor be "posh"? 🤔
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@lizzielost I’m with you, even when there was a choice to wear non marking soles plimsolls / trainers, most didn’t x.
lizzielost · F
@Hayleywg It was easier and cheaper to go without. If we were doing gymnastics or dance we would all have to take them off anyway.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@lizzielost great response Lizzie
spjennifer · 61-69, T
Depended on what the PE was, if it was like gymnastics and calisthenics then that was done barefoot on gym mats but for games like Basketball or Volleyball we always wore sneakers.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
No, we all wore plimsolls.
sally1981 · 41-45, F
@BijouPleasurette Plimsolls and very skimpy blue knickers.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@sally1981 Yeah.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@BijouPleasurette even for gymnastics?
The showers were always fun.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@lovebeingasissy No they weren't 🥶
most females felt the same way.They hated showers.In our school guys had open showers .Females had stalls.@SunshineGirl
Myself11 · 61-69, M
The girls could go barefoot but the guys had to wear tennis shoes (was not fare)
Myself11 · 61-69, M
@Hayleywg yes they do I prefer to be barefoot
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
@Myself11 I did too x
Myself11 · 61-69, M
@Hayleywg shoes are so over rated 😉
anoderod55 · 61-69, M
We did both ways ✨
SW-User
Doing PE barefoot and seeing everyone else’s soles and toes gave me a foot fetish
Not in my schools

Not when I was teaching either.
Plimsolls!
Teslin · M
PE was always with sneakers.
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
Definitely the USA way @Teslin
