There is never any harm in trying, but political views and opinions here do seem to be particularly polarised so manage your expectations accordingly 🙂

I think there may be an issue with the name of the site - Similar Worlds. I have spent my adult life trying to expose myself to views different to my own. I don't see the point of talking only to those who agree with me. That serves only to self-validate and does nothing to advance knowledge and understanding.

At the same time I don't particularly appreciate being called an idiot by people for exercising the same freedom of speech that they demand and take for granted 😅 Or being pigeon-holed and labelled on the basis of a single stated opinion that someone happens to find uncomfortable 🙃

@SunshineGirl i think rather than political views being polarised, it's more a case of encoded in the genes
@Convivial There's some truth to that. Studies have shown that people who vote conservative Republican are looking for a strong leader like a father figure to tell them what to do and how to think. Nothing wrong with that in particular, except that there's always a politician ready to take advantage.

@LordShadowfire actually there is something wrong with it... Learn to think for yourself or be led around by the nose

There's nothing wrong with discussing different points of view as long as it's done with an open mind and respect...

You know ...just like people do on sw

😂

I fear it is, since everyone seems to have their mind made up about everything, and many (not all) are utterly disrespectful of anyone who has different views.
TexChik · F
You dont argue with libs, you ignore them.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SW-User In truth Biden is senile and has been for some time. He also wasn't elected. The American bureaucrats are just more open in their power and control than the British. Both countries are not run by elected officials. They are run by career bureaucrats that use the politicians as a false front. The bureaucrats just change the politicians on a regular basis to make the people believe they actually have a say in the governing of their country.
DailyFlash · 56-60, M
@TexChik most Catholics are liberal. As are most well educated people.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@DailyFlash education =indoctrination. Most intelligent people are not liberals.
bookerdana · M
Nah,it's fun to go 132 Threads with meme-ists and trolls fun phrases,Do your homework,ur an idiot and than, best of all
You claim that debate is useful
Yes the dreaded quote attack...a fun game that may go on for years 😒
DailyFlash · 56-60, M
@bookerdana you believe The Washington Post and The NY Times??
bookerdana · M
@DailyFlash Don't believe in arguing online,Flash

No, because while we won't change the minds of the NPC types, we can change the mind of the fence-sitters who lurk here. And there is a surprisingly large amount of them.
DailyFlash · 56-60, M
@BohemianBoo that's the only reason I challenge patently false "facts"
PleasurePunch · 100+
yes cause we are the bargain basement social site and we pride ourselves in coming together to share our ignorance our pretenses and our needs and our mutual denialism too.
I don't think discussion is pointless but I try not argue.
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@Spoiledbrat well said🤗
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
No but it's not particularly useful either.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@CountScrofula Exactly this. I like to think I convince some amount of bystanders, but making all those same points on Reddit or Instagram or anywhere with a bigger audience is infinitely more impactful.
Depends on what one believes to achieve...

it's pointless to argue.
Evened · 51-55, M
Nowadays, the preference for a political direction seems to weigh more than a friendship. Politics became a sensitive topic, even more when it's about US politics,
TheunderdogofNY · 36-40, M
I'm not arguing with anyone. It's not worth it. Discussions are always cool but i don't let it escalate to arguing.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Threads follow the thoughts and direction of the OP. Opposing, serious, interjection is rarely appreciated.
Imsleepy · 31-35
Mostly. It depends on those involved. If the people are willing to learn, then no. That is rarely the case, though.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Sometimes. As long as you are entertained (and preferably not being an ass to others) it's all game.
The algorithm makes war the norm. If you're conservatives, this is fabulous.
Torsten · 36-40, M
nah its not pointless. You just ignore the crazy morons
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Yes. You will never win. Some can argue for days
@GuyWithOpinions I had an argument once on YouTube that lasted 3 months. I'm about 90% sure everybody was bringing in their alt accounts to argue.

It helps clarifying me views, and listen to others.
Discussion is rarely useless. But arguing rarely helps, especially when it devolves into name-calling and nastiness.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
It’s useless when you are argue with the same person over and over again.
It helps me to become more aware of what I believe.
