Vaccines - No man is an island

In 1963 the first measles vaccine was patented and released for the masses. Western countries have massively invested in campaigns to get people vaccinated. The consequence was, that measles was almost eradicated in parts of the world with high vaccination numbers.

Somewhere during COVID, when people had little to do during lock down, anti-vax narratives started flooding the datasets that we all live in. A percentage of people that suddenly got interested in vaccination started doing their own research. A segment of those, got hooked on the sensationalist narratives of global elites pumping you full of harmful chemicals. The consequence is that a segment of the population "delayed" or just "denied" the vaccine during this periode.
Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases, and also one of the most preventable: two doses of vaccine in childhood is 97% protective. WHO estimates that some 61 million doses were missed or delayed in 2021. In 2022, about 83% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday – the lowest proportion since 2008, when the rate was also 83%.
Ideas like: extreme forms of skepticism and ultra-individualism (With libertarian greatest hits like: I do what I want; You can't tell me what to do; Leave me alone; I know what is best for myself; Stay off my lawn; Only I know what is good for me; I'm smart enough to make my own choices; ...), are slowly coming home to roost.
The WHO's most recent global numbers, released in November, reveal that measles cases increased worldwide by 18% to about 9 million, and deaths rose 43% to 136,000, in 2022 compared to 2021. Some 32 countries had large, disruptive outbreaks in 2022, and that number ticked up to 51 in 2023, Dr. Natasha Crowcroft, WHO's senior technical adviser for measles and rubella control, told NPR.
The measles as a vaccin, is usually injected as a combination with protection for: the mumps and rubella. All these diseases have a new playing field to fester because a segment of the population has been thought to mistrust vaccinations. Something that worked for years without much pushbacks and had incredible positive results, is now suddenly a big societal issue. Our herd-immunity is being diminished purely because a small segment of entrepreneurs are making loads of money selling the gullible a conspiratorial narrative. From merchandise to books to revenue on social media sites getting payed for clicks and likes.

But as the ultra-individualist will find out... being a little Cartman can have great consequences on a societal level. Because no man is an island.

It would be interesting to know who is behind the anti-vaccine (so pro-disease?) scare tactics, and why.

Perhaps it's time the sources and nationalities of blogs, social-media posts etc were available to the user in the way that e-posts are.

(For example, BTinternet has a toolbar link called "View Source", and though most of the result is only comprehensible to IT experts it does show if the source claimed by the message is itself a lie, and sometimes reveals the nationality.)

The social(??)-media companies could do more than merely deleting harmful and sometimes illegal posts as they bleat they do, and so irretrievably, permanently block the source. In the case of illegal material, also passing the identities to the Police and ISPs. Yes the scammers and malcontents will find new instruments, or perhaps use work or public-library computers... block again... until they give up. Or are arrested.

.

In the case of measles the real harm was done by a blunder by a British doctor who wrongly muddled correlation and cause. and although the faults in his paper were soon exposed and his paper discredited the damage was already done - not least by irresponsible newspapers. Then came Covid and the wilful anti-vaccine campaigns by probably-political interests, and their malicious development may well have given the measles scare new life.
@ArishMell One of them is a big "alternative wellness" funder and profiteer of pseudoscience named Joseph Mercola.

According to a 2019 Forbes report, Joseph Mercola earns an estimated $120 million per year from his alternative wellness businesses. This includes his website, his online store, and his speaking engagements.

Naturally he plows a percentage of his profits into spreading misinformation to lure more people to buy his snake oil crap.
A 2019 investigation by the Washington Post revealed that Mercola has been a major funder of the anti-vaccine movement over the years to the tune of $4 million, with $2.9 million specifically going to the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC). Behind its benign name, the NVIC is one of the principal anti-vaccine organizations in the United States and it was identified as a super-spreader of COVID-19 misinformation on Facebook. Mercola’s foundation, entirely funded by his business, also helps fund the Organic Consumers Association led by his co-writer, Ronnie Cummins, for a total of over $3.3 million.
That is appalling!

I had no idea that sort of thing goes on.

Whatever the truth about any hazards of any medication including any vaccine, these people are raking in huge amounts of money from wilful LIES.

They are gambling, using very little effort on their part, with people's lives and most people's rather scanty knowledge of biology, purely to make a lot of money.

When are they going to be banned outright?

I don't know what laws might exist against their activities, and those will obviously vary from country to country (possibly State to State in the USA); but it's possible none do so far because they are using methods and attacks not considered when the laws were made.

The social-media companies could take the lead of course, by outright, permanent bans - not merely deleting posts. Or are they profiting from advertising revenue from these people?

As for that Texan couple to pronounce oh-so-virtuously how "Christian" they are, for sheer bloody-minded hypocracy that takes the prize. They have no regard for human life, which they view as a commercial commodity.

My body, my choice. I know you dont think thats right and the "experts" should have control over what goes into yours/others body but i reject that notion completely.

I will pass on injections thanks, especially that super safe and effective, mrna covid injection. You do you.
@gol979
The kids are not being punished though.
These are informed choices thatvare being made for the collective.

Did you know that vaccinated children can still contract measles? The increased number of unvaccinated children contracting the illness are also making those vaccinated sick? Why should those children be punished?

You cannot make a decision that is right for you but not for the collective group and still have all the benefits of the collective.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@InOtterWords get injected, doesnt stop you getting the illness that its supposed to, blame and punish the people who arent injected. Genius
@gol979 you really do not understand how vaccines work.... the information is out there and you can choose to educate yourself

See where everyone has the vaccine like with polio and small pox - the disease is gone. People do not get infected.

When you have unvaccinated people carrying the illness re-infecting the population those that are vaccinated are generally ok but there will be a few for whom the vaccine was not as effective
That population will get infected spreading the disease further.

If you choose to opt out don't cry about what you can't do
[big] Are the Covid death numbers the result of mis-classification of other causes of death? [/big]

Here in the table are US death numbers for the top ten causes of death for six years ending in 2020. Notice how there are 20% more deaths in 2020 than the average of the previous five years? Doing the math, that's 500,000 excess deaths in 2020.

Notice how, in 2020, 345,000 of those 500,000 excess deaths are classified as Covid? Notice how almost all causes of death rose in 2020, including cancer & heart disease?
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2778234

If there's any validity to the claim that lots of deaths have been mis-classified as Covid, why did almost all causes of death increase in 2020? Wouldn't mis-classification produce a reduction in those other causes? The evidence says mis-classification is a red herring.

It should only be an option.
The moment politicians mandate it..
it was clear they’re being paid by the manufacturers…
and not just covid..
the amount of jabs you gotta give your kids just to allow them to go to school is a crime..

I’m going to the beach tomorrow.. can you wear sunblock.. as mine won’t work unless your got some on too…

That make sense?

No... no, it doesn't.

An English mother appeared on the TV in the UK after her child died because she believed in the anti-vax conspiracy and failed to get him vaccinated. She came on TV to warn other mothers to get their children vaccinated for measles. She's now receiving death threats from the anti-vax groups. It isn't enough for them that her child died.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Richard65 ... what does that add to the conversation?

@Kwek00 is that a serious question?

America is the only country on earth that demands to make money from the sick and to hell with those who can't afford it.

Quote all the b/s you like there's never been any evidence that America has ever got it right and has ever led the free world in disease prevention let alone cure.

Now with Biden opening the borders old diseases that we had gotten rid of are making their way back. What was that disease in the state of Washington that was just confirmed.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@Musicman I guess bacteria and viruses are selective and don't infect the citizens of the country that travels back from where ever they came.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Kwek00 You lost me when you brought Trump into it. We just can't have a reasonable conversation with him involved.

The slump in take up for the MMR began when Andrew Wakefield wrote a paper on the connection of the jab to autism based on a sample size of....12.....yes only 12 children. The paper was retracted and Wakefield was struck off. He was struck off due to conflict of interest because he was developing his own vacci e that he wanted to sell amd tried to debunk the mmr.
He is now no longer a doc but an anti-vax activist.

People should speak to a doc instead of going online.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Natural selection. Let them not get the vaccine and get measles and increase the intelligence of the general population.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@JimboSaturn The thing I was trying too say, is that vaccinated people also run a higher risk of getting sick. Because the vaccine has a 97% protection rate. 3% of the population that almost perform a "civic duty" to society, has a higher chance of getting infected because the disease is just more prevalent.

Next to that... a large number of people that get the disease are children. Which imo isn't a segment of the population that has gotten to a moment in their development where they can make a choice (if free choice even excist).
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
Know anyone with polio, I don't either, gosh gee wonder what did that.
so lets do POLIO next eh?? or maybe small pox?
@SatyrService was polio rushed thru and mandated before a single iota of safety data and long term effects were recorded?
And reported HONESTLY… to the mandated?
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Yes it was, mandated and it worked
and yes it was tested for safety and it worked!
