Do you have a favorite British dish? Maybe a delicacy? Or something hearty?

Yum 🤤

JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I have never heard of that, certainly very interesting. I guess my favourite British dishes are your standard fish & chips. I also like roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, pot pies, and haggis.
@JimboSaturn

I guess each nation or culture has its share of unique - maybe even weird or nasty - dishes. I'm from English, Welsh and Scottish stock but have never eaten haggis or laverbread.
seaglass · F
Seaweed spread? I guess I'd try it, lol

Sunday roast, omg so good... and Scottish shortbread 🫠
Fatalice · 41-45, F
Beef Wellington is fantastic
supersnipe · 61-69, M
@Fatalice I was going to mention that! Haven't had it for years but the last time I had it (at a long service dinner) it was delicious.

A curry at a pub. Or chicken Kiev.

I made crumpets once along with lemon curd ,that was lovely
@Justmeraeagain

Something I never understood is fish and chips, with gravy.
@autumngirl27

Whoa! Not something I'd want to try.

Pass the minestrone, please :D

@KatyO83

Thanks for reviving a childhood memory - steak n kidney pie :D
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
the Welsh often spread this "bread" on toast.
Not so sure about the often.
I'd be really surprised if more than a tiny fraction of the Welsh have ever even tasted it. Perhaps @TheSirfurryanimalWales could tell us more.
@ninalanyon never tried it but it is a delicacy.

@ninalanyon

That "bread" sounds ancient and definitely off-putting. Maybe it only costs pennies to make??
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@rinkydinkydoink It's probably expensive now. But when it was first made I suspect it was by the very poor who would collect the algae themselves. I lived the first half of my life in the South West of England and never knew anyone who had eaten it despite Wikipedia saying In addition to Wales, laverbread is eaten across the Bristol Channel in North Devon,.
Domking · 61-69, M
We Bengali people like fish to be more crispy, or curried - so fish n chips isn't a favourite.
Baked Beans over toast or maybe Shepherd's Pie is my top English dishes
@Domking

Shepherd's pie! Love the stuff...
Domking · 61-69, M
@rinkydinkydoink wish I could invite you to serve a mean shepherd's pie made by me.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Not that I know of, though I assume I'd LOVE the whole roast beer, Yorkshire pudding concept.
@ChipmunkErnie

Odd you mentioned canned plum pudding - - the only steak n kidney pie I've ever had came in a flat tin container. Wasn't bad, either :D
@ChipmunkErnie

Looks like all their episodes are on YouTube :D

ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@rinkydinkydoink My wife and I loved that show, even tried to make a few things -- like bubble and squeak -- that they showed.

Shepherds pie
ffony · M
Clootie dumpling - 'sliced and fried in butter with bacon and eggs for a scrumptious, if heavy, breakfast'.

Especially good late Xmas morning.

Why minestrone?
@rinkydinkydoink I make it from scratch :) And it's a healthy, filling soup for cold weather. The way I make it it is, anyway

swirlie · 31-35, F
Britain isn't exactly known around the world for it's culinary art, so I'm not sure that I can actually answer your question and keep a straight face!
@swirlie

We like to keep our cuisine a big secret. I don't know why... !
