People and their canceling of others over jokes these days 🤦

People really need to learn to take start taking jokes again. Yes, even if the jokes really are innately offensive and/or in poor taste. Isn't the mentality of silencing people who make such jokes even more toxic and harmful than the actual jokes themselves? Think about that.

It totally is more damaging.

There was a stand up comedian who had a special on Netflix, I can't remember his name.
I found his humor unfunny, borderline offensive.
What did I do?
I stopped watching. That's it.
People need to learn they won't literally die if they're offended, they can stop subjecting themselves to whatever offends them and move on, go on with life.

@duckduckbooze I like that last sentence, lol. Well said!

@Ducky Thanks!
You've reminded me of what another comedian has said. We're in a world now where people feel the need to be offended for other people, which helps fuel this need to "cancel".
I've witnessed that too.
It really depends on the topic. Making fun of rape makes it even harder for victims to go to the police. That leaves rapists on the street to make more victims and makes millions of victims rather suffer in silence. That is definitely more harmful than one person losing their platform to be a professional bigot.

But with many other things, like the design of coffee cups or the phrase people use to wish each other a nice couple of days, people should indeed not be so sensitive.
@Ducky I partially disagree. The link between video games and school shootings has been debunked many times, but entertainment is part of the troublesome culture. Of course only cancelling comedians isn't enough, but it's one of the elements that need to be removed to heal society.

@NerdyPotato I can agree to a point. You're not wrong about it reinforcing the culture, but I mean to say it's not where one should start with dealing with it. If the actual problem is addressed, then that problem with the comedians should handle itself. Once public opinion over rape changes, they'll see that it's no longer acceptable to joke about and stop doing so, if they value their careers.
@Ducky that's true. It's not the most effective starting point.
Agreed. However I think it’s different when people say the most heinous things and then hide behind the “it was just a joke” excuse.
Ducky · 31-35, F
@MsAnnThropy Yeah, that's pretty shitty. Like sheesh, just own up and admit you made a bad joke. It's like they think their shit don't stink.
Ducky · 31-35, F
Unless you're far left or far right, then strike that. "Think" probably isn't even in your vocabulary. 🙄

You slap them

All I know is, people who post political opinions while condemning other people for having political opinions are ducking hypocrites.
