Christopher Colombo:

@Colormegone Exactly

Columbus wasn't looking for "America" he was seeking a trade route going around the Earth - the first to try it...

He was little more than a navigator, albeit brilliant...but was much abused and treated horribly by the criminal crew that Queen Isabella was able to convince the skeptical King Ferdinand to provide for the 4 voyages.

The Spanish kingdom raided the Caribbean, South, Central and Lower North America, hence they are all Spanish-speaking countries. Columbus lived his retired years in humble isolation.

History has been incorrectly taught to us.

Brief little known history.
A lynching in New Orleans lead to Columbus Day.
(If you dig deeper Italy was going to declare war on the US.)

“Yes, the mass lynching of 11 Italian immigrants in New Orleans in 1891 led to the creation of Columbus Day as a one-time national observance. In an effort to improve diplomatic relations with Italy and to combat anti-Italian sentiment, President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage as a national day of celebration in 1892.
The New Orleans lynching: A mob lynched 11 Italian immigrants after a popular police chief was murdered. Many of the victims were acquitted of the murder, and the lynching was widely supported by many newspapers at the time.
International incident: The killings caused a diplomatic rift between the United States and Italy.
Presidential proclamation: To mend relations and appease anti-Italian sentiment, President Benjamin Harrison declared October 12, 1892, a national day of celebration to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage.
The long-term result: While initially established to address the lynching, the holiday eventually became a federal holiday in 1971 and is now a day to celebrate Italian-American culture, though it is also increasingly controversial due to the negative impact of Columbus's voyages on Indigenous peoples.”

By one of my favorite beaders 🤣

Not really, but he was pretty much in charge of the first European voyage to "the New World" and brought back info about his findings to Europe, which led to the subsequent European sailings and colonization, ensuring his important place in the history of the world.
Tumbleweed · F
@ChipmunkErnie This has nothing to do with race so don't turn it into that. It has to do with the land being stolen & others taking credit for all the "wonderful things" they did for the Natives..
Thatsright · 61-69, M
@Tumbleweed They were conquered. Similar stories throughout history. Doesn’t make it right. Just the way of mankind.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Thatsright Never said it was "right", but it IS the way of history and the story of humanity.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
VIKINGS deep inland long before he bumped into something blocking his desired trade route. Much evidence they were here first but I don't know if they ever claimed discovering new land.
Some suggest Columbus said damn it man who put this my way?
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
I was here first.

@ShenaniganFoodie Goes out for a curry. Comes back with a Pemmican burger...😷
fun fact: Queen Isabella stripped columbus of all of his titles and threw him into prison once she heard the about the horrific things he was doing.
swirlie · 31-35
@deathfairy
Obviously, Queen Isabella was a Republican.
BohoBabe · M
He discovered America for Europe, which undoubtedly changed the course of history for the better.
BohoBabe · M
@HijabaDabbaDoo Yeah, my point is that Columbus was important because he discovered the land for Europe, which played an important role in America's history. No shade to the vikings, I don't want to be pillaged, but their discovery wasn't really a part of America's history.

Whether we should be glorifying exploration is a different issue, but I think it's mostly a good thing.
@BohoBabe we'll agree to disagree lol
BohoBabe · M
@HijabaDabbaDoo I still luh you.
Convivial · 26-30, F
I think the word is commercialised.... Not discovered...
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
If you dont count the vikings.. Yes..😷
HoeBag · 46-50, F
Is columbus day even a real holiday or is it kind of like Halloween, a nominal holiday?
