Not really, but he was pretty much in charge of the first European voyage to "the New World" and brought back info about his findings to Europe, which led to the subsequent European sailings and colonization, ensuring his important place in the history of the world.

@ChipmunkErnie I like how the Native Americans are left out of this whole idea.... 🙄
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Tumbleweed Because they weren't mentioned in the question/title. But in terms of history, Columbus' voyage was a world-changer. On the other hand, no Native Americans showed up in Italy via canoe in 1492; if they had, things might have been different.

@ChipmunkErnie This land was stolen from them. Period.

@Tumbleweed And? History is history, land has always been "stolen" from someone by someone else. Native Americans had no problem stealing land from each other, having wars, etc. for thousands of years pre-Columbus. What you're really saying is that you object to it being White Europeans who won in the end; as long as it was other non-Whites fighting and stealing it was okay.

@ChipmunkErnie This has nothing to do with race so don't turn it into that. It has to do with the land being stolen & others taking credit for all the "wonderful things" they did for the Natives..

@Tumbleweed They were conquered. Similar stories throughout history. Doesn’t make it right. Just the way of mankind.

@Thatsright Never said it was "right", but it IS the way of history and the story of humanity.
