Columbus wasn't looking for "America" he was seeking a trade route going around the Earth - the first to try it...
He was little more than a navigator, albeit brilliant...but was much abused and treated horribly by the criminal crew that Queen Isabella was able to convince the skeptical King Ferdinand to provide for the 4 voyages.
The Spanish kingdom raided the Caribbean, South, Central and Lower North America, hence they are all Spanish-speaking countries. Columbus lived his retired years in humble isolation.
History has been incorrectly taught to us.
