Left-wing Americans, would you publicly display a picture of a) Jesus, and b) Mohammed, and if not Mohammed..why not?

Left or Right has nothing to do with it.

With some exceptions including the 17C Puritans who didn't like anything much anyway, Christians have never had problems with images of Jesus, even of the Crucifixion, and Mary, etc.

On the other hand anyone with any basic knowledge of religion will know that imagining a portrait of the Prophet Mohammed would be very insulting to most Muslims, Sunni, Shia or Sufi.

They might even regard that as "blasphemy" and want you dead, even though the Prophet was not a Divine figure like Jesus, but an ordinary human-being, a merchant whom Allah had chosen as messenger.

So while I find very disturbing the idea that anyone should be regarded as fit for murder for such an icon, as some Muslims would call for, trying to insult people very deeply for no reason is childish and very wrong.

Several years ago I heard an Anglican priest, a bishop I think, remark that the best, most sensitive Nativity film he has seen was made in.... Iran.

@ArishMell that's not entirely correct. Images of Mohamed are taboo in Sunni, but not nearly as forbidden in Shia. There's lots of depictions of The prophet in shia artwork

@MethDozer Ah - I'd not realised that. Thankyou. I wonder if that's one reason for some of the sectarian strife among the followers?
MethDozer · M
@ArishMell I think it's more than that. Asks some of the residents Muslims but I'm pretty sure it just comes down to they think of each other as entirely heretical down to the core. I mean they really only agree on Mohammand, after he died they disagrees if the ruling authority should continue through his bloodline the other didn't

I'm not a left-winger, but I don't have pics of Jesus or Mohammed. I don't know what Jesus looked like, and I'm not Muslim. I do have crosses, a small crucifix, numerous Bibles, a Quran, and copies of other religious literature such as the Book of Mormon in public view.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
@exexec I am none of the above either but I have read them just to educate myself
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
I would have no reason to do either. So no to both.

If your angle is that people are afraid to show Mohamed due to Muslim extremism and thus Islam is worse, I would remind you that Christian history is just as dark and sordid and just because it is less bad today doesn't mean it will be less bad tomorrow.

I prefer philosophy
Poppies · 61-69, F
Neither of them. No reason to do it.
@Poppies Are you speaking for millions of Americans or just u?
Poppies · 61-69, F
@Oldanglaisadverbs of course I am speaking for myself. Do you choose to display either of those pictures?
Two fictional characters.
@LowBorn Would a) you go to West Europe and say Jesus is fictional (noone would care), b) go to a Muslim country and say Mohammed is fictional...please do this
