Did you think Upper Michigan should be classified as it's own state?

Michigan's Upper Peninsula has tried several times to become an independent state. Should the U.P. become America's 51st state? Let's see what Michiganders are saying.

Is The Upper Peninsula Too Small to Be a State?

I have been to and camped, fished, and hunted in the Upper and lower Michigan, and I understand the UP-ers desire to separate!

Oh, I forgot "The audience" reading our conversation

@HumanEarth Yes, yes you did, and we have to educate some as to what we are talking about. LOL

@WillaKissing Well for me it's always been Michigan and the U P! LOL!

For one thing, it's not too small to be a State. After-all Delaware, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are much smaller States. When I lived in Michigan back in 1992, they were talking about it then with Marquette being the proposed Capital. Michigan is just like many other States. Where Tax dollars are generally spent in the larger cities and the rest of the State must fend for themselves.

Why do they want to separate?
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
Yes Jen, from Upper Michigan wants to separate from Texas and Canada
Hold on... Isn't it a state already 🤣🤣
QCDog2659 · 61-69, M
No.

If the UP did become a new state, Michigan would just be a weird mitten-shaped state.

I’m from Michigan and the UP is too small
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Sell it to Canada make a few bucks!
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I think the population is probably too small but I definitely get how there is a distinct cultural difference in the UP.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@Starcrossed It's only about 283,000 less in population than the State of Wyoming. Whereas Alaska has 149,000 more people than Wyoming.

I often wondered why is just wasn’t part of Wisconsin
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
Hey Now! That's a good Idea
carpediem · 61-69, M
@HumanEarth Turn the UP dwellers into Cheeseheads
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I can fit into both
Why not, it's obviously big enough to be one
BLP11520 · 61-69, M
@AbsolutelyFabulous not enough people my friend
