Philosophy Question

Does a human shield have a soul?
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M Best Comment
Sadly you can't reduce someone to "collateral damage" unless you dehumanize them to the point of seeing them as literal meat shields and not people.

And as CountScrofula pointed out that dehumanization is the only way you can hold the cognitive dissonance that using human shields is immoral but executing one is a noble sacrifice.

First, the men, women, and children used as human shields should not be referred to as "it" as you have often done in these comments. Doing so, dehumanizes them.

Next, do they have a soul?? That's a religious question. Personally, as a Christian, I do believe we each do have an eternal soul and this certainly includes the human beings you refer to as human shields.

I suspect from what I know of your beliefs that you do not believe they have souls. Am I wrong there? Do you accept a supernatural plane and the existence of a soul separate from the physical?

@Burnley123 as in trying to eliminate a enemy which has vowed to eliminate it? Which has been living missiles across into Israel on a regular basis for bears, and against whom no other country will act? I think what the crazies on the West Bank are doing is wrong and they should be arrested for their crimes. I would hope a 2 state "solution" might produce peace, but I have great doubts, but it deserves a try, only if Hamas is gone. When Israel left Gaza it took less than 2 years for Hamas to take control then used most funds it managed to raise too build its fortifications, purchase weapons and produce October 7.

@samueltyler2 Hamas is a terrorist group. They state their extremist goals openly. The Israeli government is not going to admit to what they want (Palestinians to go away--either by fleeing to Egypt or Jordan or another country or simply being killed off), but their actions speak louder than their words. Palestinians are a nuisance to the Israeli government and they want them gone. Hamas exists because of the prison-like conditions of Gaza. Israel has no one to blame but themselves for creating this problem.

This is part of "telling the whole story". It isn't "telling the whole story" to act like Hamas came out of nowhere. You can't ignore the context and the history that explain why Hamas exists and why they do what they do.

@SW-User it is so wonderful to see how you blame those who have been the victims for thousands of years. You call Gaza prison-like which is your interpretation, and may truly reflect what happened after Hamas took over.

Remember that NO Arab country, or other, was willing to intervene for the Arabs in the area which resulted in Gaza becoming a ghetto. The 1967 and 1972 wars certainly didn't help them, again the neighboring wealthy countries did nothing to help.

This current problem was precipitated by Hamas's inhuman slaughter of over 1400 people, husband, wives, children, babies, and statements that they would repeat the efforts until all the Jews were killed.
The original, 1988 version of the Hamas charter emphasize four main themes:

Destroying Israel and establishing an Islamic theocracy in Palestine is essential;
Unrestrained jihad is necessary to achieve this;
Negotiated resolutions of Jewish and Palestinian claims to the land are unacceptable;
Historical anti-semitic tropes that reinforce the goals.
The Covenant proclaims that Israel will exist until Islam obliterates it, and jihad against Jews is required until Judgement Day. Compromise over the land is forbidden. The documents promote holy war as divinely ordained, reject political solutions, and call for instilling these views in children.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow You are like Hamas hiding behind the civilians of Gaza and expecting to be shielded. Grow a pair.
@KiwiBird Ummm no. Now you are just throwing insults because you have no argument.

And I see you are using that IDF approved excuse for slaughter.

Let me know when you have a real argument. Not going to waste my time with grade school insults and bad faith arguments.

The components of a human shield have a life energy. If you use the word "soul" to describe this, then, yes, you could argue that a human shield has a collective soul.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@OliRos It's meta
OliRos · 18-21, F
@Burnley123 😂😂😂 Facebook??? Holy shit!!!
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@OliRos Exactly.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
The IDF paradox

Using a human shield is horrible but shooting a human shield is noble.
deadgerbil · 22-25
@CountScrofula don't forget the coveted hostages

we want them back so bad we'll kill them before you do
Freeranger · M
I find the question wholly absurd. You knew the answer before asking the question in the public arena.
Your grandstanding with such trite questions leads me to wonder just what you're looking to achieve by asking it.

Does the power-broker placing those shields in harms way for affect have a soul? That may be your deeper question my lad.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Starcrossed Ikr. About half the buildings in Gaza have already been demolished.
Freeranger · M
@Starcrossed Israel has stated that they will help then rebuild, if you'd been reading.....anyway.
Freeranger · M
@Burnley123 Here, let me help you finish the sentence in a more accurate way. "...... all of the buildings that held tunnels and command centers under them where Hamas plan terror and store weapons.
Is that the refugee camp firing rockets into cities, or the hospital being used as a terrorist HQ?

If either have a soul we’ll find it with enough craters blown in them.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
Of course they do. The object of dehumanizing people is that it makes them easier to kill on a personal level.
deadgerbil · 22-25
Only if they're from a certain place and agree with my politics
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@deadgerbil people like us...

Does Hamas have a soul?
I personally have never seen bigger cowards.
I don’t think satire is appropriate in this instance.
@OliRos There’s no validity to the question. If someone has to ask if a human life has a soul they should question THEIR validity.
OliRos · 18-21, F
@Pinkstarburst The question was, does a human shield have a soul.

The discussion is about the constitution of a human shield and whether or not the individual souls can combine to form a collective soul.

There is no justification of the use of human shields.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Pinkstarburst Sigh. What is implied is that the people in favour of the Israeli bombing campaign dehumanise people by calling them human shields

You've read my reply to sara and you know what my intent is.

I'm not sure that enough people are treating your question with the philosophical rigour it requires.
What sort of human shield- a buckler shield, heater shield, pavise shield?

You didn't specify.
SW-User
No, it’s like shooting chickens. The thing is they respect chickens more.
