American people took the Indian lands with the same shameless mighty might!
I sure hope something stops the USA.

hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
Greenland is part of Denmark. A few years ago Denmark and Canada were at loggerheads with each other fighting over a tiny island between Greenland and Canada. I don't remember who won the spat and to be honest don't care.
Phaethon · 46-50, M
I think the orange dragon wants it because Russia has significantly built up its Arctic military infrastructure, with bases and airfields like Nagurskoye in Alexandra Land, which are geographically closer to Greenland. We are preparing for the next world war but people are too worried about pronouns to see it coming.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ninalanyon I wonder who if anyone advises the man, within his own government, civil-service and military?

I looked at the military c.v. of each of James Vance, Peter Hegseth and Donald Trump.

Vance was a military journalist, in the Army but non-combatant.

Hegseth has served on active Army duty.

Trump's "military" experience is limited to school or college cadet forces.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ArishMell It doesn't really matter what the military necessities are. Retired US generals have pointed out in interviews even on the infamous Fox news that Trump doesn't need to annex or buy Greenland in order to have bases there. This is something that anyone with the slightest interest in the region has been aware of for half a century. Trump is not interested in the welfare of the USA or of any other country, only in his own wealth and his standing with those people who can make him feel good.

What really worries me is that much of his behaviour is enabled by the US constitution (that doesn't mean that it is lawful) and this combined with the more or less religious attitude to the document in the US probably means that now that Pandora's box has been opened that there might be no way to close it, not even to keep hope. So even if we can assume that Trump will not be able to serve a third term there is no guarantee that subsequent governments of either stripe will fix the problems. Being able to wield this kind of power will be attractive to all subsequent presidents, or at least their hangers on, regardless of their nominal politics.

@ArishMell Vice President Vance is a US Marine, was assigned as a combat correspondent during an overseas deployment, saw combat

I stand with Greenland, but I have to admit I am confused exactly what its status is -- independent and yet somehow part of Denmark?
pdockal · 56-60, M
No, Greenland is not a fully standalone country; it's a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Greenland has been under the protection of NATO, of which the US and Denmark are both members. Nevertheless, the Joint Chiefs of Staff proposed acquiring Greenland in 1955

Declaring itself a "near-Arctic state" in 2018, China has sought to build a "Polar Silk Road". It is particularly interested in Greenland’s rare earth minerals, which are vital for green technologies and currently dominated by Chinese markets

Russia maintains several military installations in the region and considers the Arctic vital to its defense. It has recently restored Soviet-era infrastructure and increased its naval and air activity near Greenland
Republican senator Mitch McConnell says:

We already have everything we need.

Greenland already cooperates.

Our Arctic access already exists.

What Trump is proposing isn't strategy, it's burning allied trust for nothing.

"Incinerating the hard-won trust of loyal allies" is not strength. It's self-sabotage.

@pdockal
I don't have any problem at all with English, but you seem to have a problem with incomplete thoughts.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@swirlie

Your the only one with a problem
If you can't comprehend that's not my problem
@pdockal says
four distinct U.S. presidential administrations have officially or formally explored the acquisition

And how many of those four admins proposed "Incinerating the hard-won trust of loyal allies"?? Not just one ally, mind you, but thirty two loyal NATO allies.

C'mon, how many of those four admins proposed crossing 32 allies to get Greenland??
It wont matter what anybody "stands with" it isn't up to Walmart shoppers to make these decisions.
I'm a little confused if it's an independent country or if it's under Denmark...
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@sstronaut It's a self-governing autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark
@ninalanyon Which means it's technically not an independent country, correct?

Not trying to make any additional points, just trying to understand weather it's a country or territory, but maybe it's not that simple.

Either way, America should be happy just being allowed to have the current Military bases there, and not want more.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@sstronaut There's no 'technically' about. It is not an independent country.. It is not currently a country at all. If one were to call it a country it could only be in the same sense that Scotland is a country but that is a usage that I think is now confined to internal use in the United Kingdom, and some sports.

Let's see what happens if trump makes a move on Greenland.

Ukraine is not a part of NATO - Denmark / Greenland is a member of NATO - that maybe makes the difference
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Charity Not sure I see the connection. Putin's attack on Ukraine is illegal and wilfully extremely cruel to the inhabitants, but Trump's ambition is just as amoral.
Charity · 70-79
@ArishMell
No one said or indicated Putin's attack on Ukraine was legal.

If the US tries to take Greenland by force that is illegal too

My initial statement and it's connection is:

The only reason why NATO has an intervened in what Russia is doing to the Ukraine is because Ukraine is not a part of NATO.

Greenland is a part of NATO and even though the United States is a part of NATO, for US to make a hostile military act against Greenland is going against NATO and NATO is sworn to defend all countries up under to them.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
It's kind of contradictory that Greenland is ice and snow, whereas Iceland is profuse with greenery.

ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Sidewinder It is! :)
Khenpal1 · M
@Sidewinder It was during Vikings before internet , you had to make it green 🤣
Love the rabid left .
They want to pretend trump is the only one after Venezuela, Greenland..

China and Russia arnt interested… ?

Just let them take them?

They just added Canada and carney to their collection.

Any faux outrage there? 🤔

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout correct assessment!

@Bravely
It’s about the people who live in their own country having the right to determine their own future.
Clearly they can't defend their own country(if you can even call it that). And who are we kidding, the US military could wipe out Germany, Denmark and Greenland going at 10%
It's cute though how they wanna make a stance. It's admirable, I'll give them that.
Mcmarie90 · 31-35, F
Greenland's owned by Denmark though. That's why NATO is involved.
Bravely · 56-60, F
@Mcmarie90 yes I do know that…it’s an autonomous territory. Crucially, more and more autonomy was granted after democratic referendums.
Democratic.
The right of the people to decide their future.

its not about Greenland or other land , a country with almost 39 trillions in debt wants to buy something with fake money 🤣
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Sigh. It’s not independent. Fail post.
Bravely · 56-60, F
So all the Trump simps are spouting their predictable nonsense, peppered with the obvious tedious insults.
Honestly can’t you be a bit more original?

Anyway, we all know it’s about oil.
It’s always about oil.
@Bravely spout spout spout!!! Spout some more!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Bravely You prefer the ruskies and chicoms getting it, eh
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
The military will be following illegal orders if they invade. They should refuse.
ShenaniganFoodie · 36-40, M
BUT, when someone believes they are GOD
swirlie · 31-35
No, it's not about oil either. Greenland is nothing more than a smokescreen for Trump's otherwise hidden connection to the Jeffery Epstein file.
swirlie · 31-35
Don't worry about Greenland. Trump is only using his threats of annexation as a smoke screen for his Jeffery Epstein coverup.
