Can you say something about your country that makes no sense?

I never understood why the South of Egypt is called upper Egypt 🤔

Upper Egypt is the southern portion of Egypt and is composed of the lands on both sides of the Nile that extend upriver from Lower Egypt in the north to Nubia in the south. -wikipedia-

The American southeast is just called the South, but the southwest is called the Southwest.
@BlueVeins Was that the same before the Civil war? I'd guess it wasn't.

@BlueVeins Crazy when Maryland gets called the "South".

And then you have the Midwest, which is west of the East Coast and the originally settled part of the country, but to those of us on the West Coast, there's nothing "west" about the Midwest.

In California, "east" and "west" are determined by the northwest-to-southeast running fault lines, so you have a city like East Palo Alto, which is literally due north of Palo Alto, but it gets called "east" because if we see the fault line as north/south, it can only be east.

@PiecingBabyFaceTogether The naming convention dates back to the founding of the US, to my understanding. It's like that because the US was originally just a nub on the east coast of North America.

This country that fought to free itself from oligarchy has decended into an oligarchy that wears the clothes of a democratic republic.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
My country very famously revolted against monarchy and made the abolition of monarchs the basis on which we founded our government, yet we have multiple cities and states named after monarchs.

Louisiana, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Maryland, New York were all named after royalty

@TinyViolins I thought it was New Amsterdam?
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 That's NYC, not New York State
Gumba1000 · M
@TinyViolins Got you now.

Can't find anything that makes sense about it 😶
@Nanori You have pretty green mountains.
Nanori · F
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether that's not a matter of 2+2

My country is called England, yet there is not an ENG tribe or people. We admire King Arthur - who fought against the invading Angles - the original English? And we also call ourselves British - a people who were here before us and we massacred.
Gumba1000 · M
@LizOwen Emigration certainly increased to Brittany then. It was happening in a century before that invasion too.
LizOwen · 41-45, F
@Gumba1000 And increased when the Germanics began their murderous invasion.
Gumba1000 · M
That's what I said.

Boris never finding hair gel in the morning.

Because that's the direction the Nile flows from. North being the "top of the world" is a relatively recent convention, and it's just a cartographic convention.
@DunningKruger Aha that is a great explanation it's starting to feel less confusing 😊

French fries are not French. What other lies have the food industry told us?😒
Gumba1000 · M
@Iwillwait Hot dogs
Iwillwait · M
@Gumba1000 ..and what about hotdogs?🥺
Gumba1000 · M
@Iwillwait I bloody hope there's no dog in them! I paid for pigeon!
Britain first & EDL.

Two cheeks of the same arsehole.
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether English defence league. An alt right 'organisation'
I've weirdly seen its leader in person when I was a kid and it was in a theme park of all places
@HijabaDabbaDoo Illuminati 😅 funny because my first gf was British Indian and she was obsessed with them it was crazy.
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether I think we were all obsessed with the illuminati at one point or another. Especially us British Desi's. We have a flair for the dramatics

Believe it or not, the sun *does* rise in Morocco

@SW-User That's why you people are hot 😎

So Is the Northern part of Egypt called lower Egypt?😳
@Tminus6453 Don't think about it. It's also called the Delta
LizOwen · 41-45, F
It's 'up' the Nile - upriver.
@LizOwen Still confusing.
eMortal · M
Because the source of the Nile is from there. The Nile flows from South to North. So the South is on a higher ground.
