My country very famously revolted against monarchy and made the abolition of monarchs the basis on which we founded our government, yet we have multiple cities and states named after monarchs.
Louisiana, Georgia, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Maryland, New York were all named after royalty

@TinyViolins New York? How's that named after royalty?
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 King James II was the Duke of York
Gumba1000 · M
@TinyViolins Yes? Surely "New York" is named after the city of York.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 Nope, King Charles named it after his brother
Gumba1000 · M
@TinyViolins In that case I can see where you're coming from. But I'd tell him that his brother is not called York.

@Gumba1000 Queen Elizabeth was not called Virginia either
Gumba1000 · M
@TinyViolins Virgin queen. Exactly. Not named after the royalty but rather an aspect of them. However were these places not named before the Revolutionary Wars?
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 True, but even New York used to be called New Netherland. Names can change
Gumba1000 · M
@TinyViolins I thought it was New Amsterdam?
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@Gumba1000 That's NYC, not New York State

@TinyViolins Got you now.
