Hey people who are old enough to remember these ads in the back of comic books,

did you ever send away for X-Ray Glasses? The ones where the ad had the picture of the guy looking through the girl's clothing?

What if anything did they actually do??
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I remember those ads. As well as the ads recruiting kids to sell a newspaper called Grit (which I do not recall ever being referred to by anyone other than in those comic book ads!)

I never bought any of that stuff. But one time , a friend offered me a stick of chewing gum. It turned out to be a gag item he ordered from that comic book page. It was supposedly super hot. But I just kept chewing it, not realizing this, and enjoying the fact that finally I had some gum that didn't lose its flavor right away!

@DrWatson there was also garlic gum and that stuff Peewee Herman gave to Francis(?) on Peewee's Big Adventure. It has some kind of black dye in it that makes it look like youre chewing ink.
@Jayciedubb Yes ! That’s what I remember that gum was about, as a practical joke.

@bijouxbroussard yes. My sister sent away for 2 packs of it. ..it came like Wrigley's doublemint in a feneric wrapper and you were supposed to rewrap it in whatever wrapper you were trying to pass it off as. ..but it was rock hard. Lol and the black ink stuff had too much powder on it trying to hide the dark spot on the gum. Idk if she ever got anyone to fall for it.

My thing was those little cigarette loads that looked like chunks of toothpicks that would explode when burned. They came in a little, round, red and white tin. But i never had to send away for them. ..they could be found at basically any corner store. ..especially the ones that sold those hot cinnamon toothpicks..
I barely remember buying some type of detective gadget, like a "secret decoder" 😂 My friend bought one of those black prediction balls with a little rectangular window that would bring up the answer you asked it. Hahaha that was so much fun at the time. We didn't believe in it but we sure thought it was fine and then remember the candy cigarettes? Hahaha with a little pink ends. There's lots of memories of things like that, from hula hoops to Kewpie dolls, Etc and the little prize in the Cracker Jack's box. That was always fun. We watched The Lone Ranger. Hahaha

I don't know what these glasses did. I never had them, but the ads were in every comic book in the 60s-70's.

@badminton yes, those ones!!
Surely somebody must have actually bought a pair... ?
BLP11520 · 61-69, M
@badminton 😄where are mine ?
Yes. I pooled money with some friends and we bought one. It kind of put an outline around everything you saw.

@ElwoodBlues cool, thank you!
Luckylu · 61-69, F
I remember guys saying they had x-ray glasses on and could see right through clothing. They tried to convince the girls that it worked. Some were gullible enough to believe it.
BLP11520 · 61-69, M
@Luckylu yeah, How is the writing going?
Luckylu · 61-69, F
@BLP11520 You now gave me another subject to write about. 🤣
BLP11520 · 61-69, M
@Luckylu I did??
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I do remember those and no I never bought any.
@Degbeme any regrets?
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@saragoodtimes nah ... I was pretty sure they didn`t work.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
Yes i remember them but never bought any. Apparently, if you want to see through clothes, you have to get a Sony Handycam with night vision. I remember reading about it about 10 or 12 years ago.

I did have one of those but i never used it in night vision mode or recorded anyone whose clothes i would care to see through..
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@Jayciedubb that handycam sounds evil!
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@ServantOfTheGoddess yea. . The thing about Sony is that they make some amazing lenses. They bought Minolta years ago and took their lens technology to another level. That's why their cameras aren't so high with their megapixel count because they dont need to because of their lens quality.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
This was an actual product???
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 It was actually advertised, this I can attest to. According to some of the replies here it did actually exist, sort of!
@sarabee1995 It was, although of course it didn’t really work. But I’m sure some boys spent their pennies hoping !
maskedbandit · 61-69, M
I had a pair and I actually thought they worked, until I noticed I had stumbled upon a nudist beach. 🤣 😅
back in 50es or 60es I think,,na never bought any most of the girls I knew, all ready see ,
I never bought anything like that, but I remember the ads.
My sister bought the "sea monkeys" and received a bag of brine shrimp ! 😅
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I always wondered about those too!!

Were they alive? I'm sure they didn't look anything like the humanoid creatures in the pictures in the ad!
@ServantOfTheGoddess They were alive, basically. But they were nothing at all like what was expected I don’t remember how they lasted, but it wasn’t that long.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard It's so weird when I think about it. What genius had the idea of packaging shrimp and shipping them to kids under the pretence of being interesting monkey-like pets? The mind boggles.
