How do you minimise your stuff?

My daughter just moved out....and im going thru shelves.

I have so many things that bring memories.
I dont know how to go about deleting stuff

I paid two lovely young ladies to come and help me de-clutter. They run a business just doing this. Only when they came did I realise that I have a strong streak of 'hoarder' in my personality. You do have to prioritise and when someone asks you outright, when was the last time you looked at/used this or that and is standing next to you that you have to make a decision. I am a great one for believing that 'it might come in useful one day'. Of course, if after 30+ years the 'one day' hasn't come there is a logic in sending it to the charity shop, recycling or even the tip if it's totally obsolete.

As someone else has suggested, I keep a few keepsakes from previous generations and digitise a few of the myriad photos passed down. However, it is still a stuggle to throw out things which 'might come in handy one day'. 🥴

Prioritising is the only way. Our homes can only hold so much stuff and it really is only stuff.
I sell my clutter on Vinted, not sure if you have it there but it's like a completely free version of eBay.

The memories can remain even with the thing gone. Refresh your memory as you pack it to move it forward. If a useful item, I donate so someone else can enjoy and use. If of value, sell and use the money for new experiences/. memories
@BrandNewMan im down to nearly everything that:
- were gifts from my kids,
- have use,
- or have special people/events connected to them.

Its still more than id like.

But you're right.....i need some rules.

Maybe just a bit at a time?
Im finding abit overwhelming, (albeit freeing), to edit decades of life abruptly 🤷‍♀
BrandNewMan · 61-69, M
@OogieBoogie That's progress .. and a good idea to do it a bit at a time. I'd have trouble parting with gifts from my sons too, understandable.

Find ways to hold onto memories without the clutter
Obviously it's easier said then done
But especially when you downsize you don't have a choice

Maybe your houseful of treasured memories doesn’t need to be reduced....only distilled.
You keep the love, release the clutter, and carry forward what still tells the truth of who you are.

🤔
@Punxi that's a nice thought.🤗

But i have always has this fuzzy image in my head what i wanted my house to look like.

Between raising kids, having a controlling ex, and being caugjt up in the chaos of the everyday....it never happened.
It just organically got cluttered, collected.... held onto.

I never seemed to get round to doing me.

Now i finally have time🤗

This may not be my house but....well ...i want it as close to that fuzzy ideal as i can get it.

Even if it is decades late.

I want to come home to serenity and calm.
Not this bogged up, too much, dusty chaos.
Ive kept too much.
Hung on too tight.

I want clarity and space.
A little bit of witch, a splash of nature, (maybe a smidge of nostalgia).

I dont think its healthy to keep everything.
Its about .... moving on, letting go.
And like you said....just keeping the distilled love.

Im just shit at distilling 😂

@OogieBoogie [never seemed to get round to doing me.

Now i finally have time]

That in an of itself is a beautiful thing.

All of it

And I get it. Lived in a shoebox all though school. Graduated, relocated 3000 miles away and brought only my clothes and a laptop....a few book.

Still working on my fuzzy ideal...but this has definitely insipered me.

I hope it all becomes crystal clear for you.

😊

I've not done that yet, since moving into my own place and I really need to. I'm thinking ebay/similar but I need scales and possibly a printer for that.
4meAndyou · F
I take photos of "treasures" that are crowding me out of house and home, and I keep all my photos on a loop on my desktop.
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, MVIP
I don't throw out things that are irreplaceable, like photos.

But otherwise my rule is simple: if I haven't used it for a year I can get rid of it. I try to go through my stuff periodically to see what I can get rid of.
@FeetAreFantastic that's the hard part.... these are display things...mementos, gifts and such. Each one is like a photo - it has memories attached to it🫤🤷‍♀
Thought about joining your local tent city?
Dont pay them exorbitantly high energy and rent prices..

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout ugh.... this renting business is brutal!
I think about how much i could be paying off a house instead.

It hurts 🫤
I remind myself what I want to let go of and what I want to hold on to then get busy. 📝

I sell everything on FB or eBay
@StygianKohlrabi i honestly couldn't be bothered😂

Its more the emotional connection to every damned little thing.
Everything has a person or a story connected to it.

Ugh....i need to get brutal
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
@OogieBoogie maybe you can be one of those funny old ladies with a cluttered mantle piece
@StygianKohlrabi dear lort NO 😂
Im fully on my way to being a hipster, pirate, activist granma to two adorable fur babies🤗

Even if it kills me - i REFUSE to have a decor of dusty relics from yesteryear 😏

Books - yes
Dvds - yes
....but the buck stops there on knickerty knacks of utter superfluousness.💪

I think i need to make myself some rules 🤔
Thatsright · 61-69, M
Give away to friends, charity resale store or the dump.
@Thatsright yep.... that's what im doing. Mu daughter gets to go thru it, anything useful goes to charity.... the rest in the bin or fire.
