The Believer's Defense Against Spiritual Wickedness

Scripture paints a clear picture: Demons are real, intelligent, and organized. They know our weak spots and how to push them, through various temptations.

They are called unclean spirits (Mark 1:27), evil spirits (Luke 7:21), and powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12).

They are demonic messengers under the direction of their master, Satan, who is the “ruler of the kingdom of the air.” (Ephesians 2:2)

“Our struggle is not against flesh and blood,” Paul writes, “but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 2:2)

They are demonic, fallen angels. Scripture is careful not to overindulge our curiosity, but Matthew 25:41, mentions eternal fire prepared for "the devil and his angels," and Revelation 12:7-9, describes the dragon (Satan) and his angels being cast out of heaven. Other passages, like Jude 1:6, mention angels who abandoned their dwelling (heaven). However, the Bible’s focus isn’t on how demons are structured, but on how they’re defeated.

So what do these unseen beings want?

In one word: ruin.

Their goal mirrors their master's. They want your soul... you. To turn you against Christ and His saving grace. To steer you away from salvation:

The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy.” (John 10:10)

They corrupt worship (1 Corinthians 10:20).

They deceive the nations (Revelation 16:14).

They whisper lies that bend truth, stir fear, and fracture faith (John 8:44).

They seek not just to torment the body but to twist the image of God within it (Mark 5:2-5).

And yet, even at their strongest, they are not above Christ.

When demons confronted the apostles, the demons trembled at the name of Christ.

Hell’s legions may be many, but their leash is short.

Jesus never taught His followers to study demons. But he did teach them how to resist them, as fascination and communication with spiritual darkness, dims the spiritual light of Christ in believers.

Demons may organize armies, but they fear one name above all others...Jesus. They tremble at even the mention of His name:

James 2:19 KJV - "You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and know Jesus as the God of this universe—and tremble!"

When He rebuked the unclean spirit in Capernaum, it left instantly (Mark 1:25–26).

When His disciples cast out demons in the name of Jesus, even hell itself was shaken. (Luke 10:18)

The cross was the final blow. Every demonic ruler and unseen power was humiliated at Calvary.

“Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:15)

Demons still move. They still deceive. But their war is lost.

They are outlaws running on borrowed time, waiting for the sentence already written:

“Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41)

Paul doesn’t tell believers to fear demons. He tells us to stand firm against them. Here's how:

“Put on the full armor of God… so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11)

The full armor of God is: Truth. Righteousness. Faith. The Word of God.

We don’t fight darkness with rituals. We fight it with obedience. We fight it with Christ.

Though demonic spirits roam the world, hoping to influence people to turn against Christ, we are not hopeless. Believers have nothing to fear. Demons can not rule Jesus, they cannot take over His throne nor steal our salvation through Christ:

Jesus said, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand." John 10:28 - 29

Jesus reigns supreme over every realm, both physical and spiritual. Every demonic spirit, every power of darkness, every demon that has ever uttered a word against God, will one day bow before Him.

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Philippians 2:10)

You don’t need to name the darkness to defeat it. You just need to know the Light of the World...Jesus.

Believers are told to resist (turn away from whatever the temptation) and away from the devil's influence. Doing so, under and by the authority of Jesus Christ, the devil and his demon followers shall flee from you. That is a promise from God, in James 4:7.

Do not intentionally entertain thoughts of sin. That's where it all starts, with just a thought, so catch that thought and turn away from it, before it materializes into sin. Resist the devil and sin, and Satan shall flee from you, but you have to do it by the authority of Jesus Christ. Demons don't fear you, and won't obey you, but they will obey Christ, and that is why we cast out demons in the name of Jesus and by His authority. Only then, will they flee.

I needed this....I don't know why but the enemy has taught me to stay away from the church... Due to an impure spirit that harrasses me will also harrass the innocent church members.. And I don't know how to get rid of it. So to protect the church I disobey Jesus and I don't go... Which makes me sad that I'm a part of the body not being used in the church itself! I do believe Matthew 16:15-15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. But I don't know how to apply it to my life, and my church, and the members and leaders of the churches... I feel so defeated but I want to have a breakthrough shed this impure spirit and all of the grace and gifts bestowed upon me would benefit the church with no problems... It's like when I prayed for my auntie to have a good week at work, she came to me sobbing because she had a really rough week at work? Like it got worse???? I feel defeated there too... I don't want to feel defeated! I want to rise above some way some how and not let fear dictate my life, but let the Lord be the Lord of my life instead!!!
@saintsong I do want to say sister that I believe you'll have to put off that demonic influence just like you would any other negative influence that may try to come into your life by whatever person or entity. Just don't allow it. Don't entertain that spirit's suggestions. Don't give them more power than they have or deserve. Remember, it's just a suggestion by them and we do not have to allow it to affect us. Like anything else we can turn away from it. Refuse to allow it in our lives. What we want to do is follow Christ and he will take care of the rest.

Think about it this way. If a robber came into your house and you knew he was there and you had a gun to protect yourself, but you allowed him to go ahead and just take anything he wanted and destroy your house, who would be to blame? We can apply the same, to spiritual things. If we allow things that we don't want in our lives, then we'll get what we've always gotten. We can not allow it. It is true that we get what we allow, no matter who the Christian. We must be there for Mindful and on guard in the Spirit, as the Bible says. We don't have to be defeated. No matter what comes or when it comes, just keep going on and doing for Jesus. No matter how many times, rebuke the bad spirits and cast them out in the name of Jesus. He says we have that power and as Heirs of Christ, we do. You're not fighting this battle alone, sister. I have battles as well and I'm praying for you and I ask you to pray for me. God never said it would be easy, and it's not, but he did say he would be with us to help us and see us through. He keeps his promises. We must keep the faith.

We can trust Him to help us and keep us under His wings. I love you sister.

@LadyGrace Thank you kindly for the encouragement and strength to rise above!!! This site is blessed to have you here, I am blessed to have your insight and you are a true treasure to this site!! I think I'm going to be okay...
@saintsong I think you will, honey. I'm praying for you and I know you can get through this. The Lord is always by your side to help you. I know when I have challenges like this, I asked myself who do I want to please, the Lord, or other influences? That really helps because I know how deeply and strongly you love the Lord so when it hurts to get those voices trying to tempt you to turn the other way, just say to yourself no, I want to love and serve the Lord and I'm going to do that, regardless of what other things are trying to steer me away from my close fellowship to the Lord. I love you dearly sister. You're one of the few here that truly so deeply love the Lord and stand for him and are faithful to him. I'm proud to call you my sister in the Lord. And I know the Lord is so proud of you. I admire your strength and faithfulness to him. God bless you, Sister. ❤🫂🙏

Even St Paul had to struggle with desires of the body.

"For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."

Good to see you back, Lady Grace! 😍
@Thinkerbell Thank you,Thinkerbell. Great to "see" you again. ❤🤗

Yes, absolutely... Paul struggled with sins and various temptations of the flesh. Great example. Thank you!

The name of Jesus Christ is enough for all of us. Thank you Grace for this beautiful post.

After a long time, Welcome back to SW.

With just what I’ve seen in my family and the things they did and how they ended up I believe this 100%. It’s like they swung the front door open and invited them in. They call me “The Lucky One” when they start talking together and seem so resentful. I was praying to God for protection from the time I was 8 years old due to being in a chaotic dysfunctional home with a sadistic father
@cherokeepatti oh thank God for that. It's good we can learn from others.
@cherokeepatti I'm sorry, Patti. I didn't see that you asked me this until just now. The product is called "i...Thyroid IODINE" spelled just like that on the bottle with a little i. 12.5 mg over the counter from RLC Labs. It is a combination of iodine and iodide. 7.5 mg. Of iodide from potassium iodide, and 5 mg. of Iodine and 2.5 mg. from potassium Iodide.

How did you keep from getting sick to your stomach and keeping your hair, when getting the chemo? Do you think that would work for everyone? I know everybody's system is different but I'm wondering if it would help everyone.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@LadyGrace I lost my hair the first time, and it grew back thicker than before. But have lost a lot again this time, probably all of it by the end of the year at the rate it’s going. As far as not getting sick I have no idea. Ray and I both have tolerated chemo well. Maybe it’s because of the food we’re eating. A lot of veggies every day may be helping, I have no idea.

Amen.
It's good to see your gorgeous soul back.
Firestarter · 31-35, F
@Firestarter It doesn't feel scary to those who understand what they're dealing with, as believers. One just has to be spiritually on guard. We can't fight by our own power, the spirits of darkness, but we can resist them and command them to leave in the name of Jesus and by his authority, and the Bible says they definitely leave the presence of the believer, because they are afraid of even the name of Jesus. He is more powerful than the demons. And demons cannot enter a believer who loves and lives for the Lord.
Musicman · 61-69, M
Amen 🙏 Excellent post. I am glad to see you back online. 😊😊😊😊😊
