The Believer's Defense Against Spiritual Wickedness

Scripture paints a clear picture: Demons are real, intelligent, and organized. They know our weak spots and how to push them, through various temptations.

They are called unclean spirits (Mark 1:27), evil spirits (Luke 7:21), and powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12).

They are demonic messengers under the direction of their master, Satan, who is the “ruler of the kingdom of the air.” (Ephesians 2:2)

“Our struggle is not against flesh and blood,” Paul writes, “but against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world, and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 2:2)

They are demonic, fallen angels. Scripture is careful not to overindulge our curiosity, but Matthew 25:41, mentions eternal fire prepared for "the devil and his angels," and Revelation 12:7-9, describes the dragon (Satan) and his angels being cast out of heaven. Other passages, like Jude 1:6, mention angels who abandoned their dwelling (heaven). However, the Bible’s focus isn’t on how demons are structured, but on how they’re defeated.

So what do these unseen beings want?

In one word: ruin.

Their goal mirrors their master's. They want your soul... you. To turn you against Christ and His saving grace. To steer you away from salvation:

The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy.” (John 10:10)

They corrupt worship (1 Corinthians 10:20).

They deceive the nations (Revelation 16:14).

They whisper lies that bend truth, stir fear, and fracture faith (John 8:44).

They seek not just to torment the body but to twist the image of God within it (Mark 5:2-5).

And yet, even at their strongest, they are not above Christ.

When demons confronted the apostles, the demons trembled at the name of Christ.

Hell’s legions may be many, but their leash is short.

Jesus never taught His followers to study demons. But he did teach them how to resist them, as fascination and communication with spiritual darkness, dims the spiritual light of Christ in believers.

Demons may organize armies, but they fear one name above all others...Jesus. They tremble at even the mention of His name:

James 2:19 KJV - "You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and know Jesus as the God of this universe—and tremble!"

When He rebuked the unclean spirit in Capernaum, it left instantly (Mark 1:25–26).

When His disciples cast out demons in the name of Jesus, even hell itself was shaken. (Luke 10:18)

The cross was the final blow. Every demonic ruler and unseen power was humiliated at Calvary.

“Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:15)

Demons still move. They still deceive. But their war is lost.

They are outlaws running on borrowed time, waiting for the sentence already written:

“Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:41)

Paul doesn’t tell believers to fear demons. He tells us to stand firm against them. Here's how:

“Put on the full armor of God… so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:11)

The full armor of God is: Truth. Righteousness. Faith. The Word of God.

We don’t fight darkness with rituals. We fight it with obedience. We fight it with Christ.

Though demonic spirits roam the world, hoping to influence people to turn against Christ, we are not hopeless. Believers have nothing to fear. Demons can not rule Jesus, they cannot take over His throne nor steal our salvation through Christ:

Jesus said, "I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand." John 10:28 - 29

Jesus reigns supreme over every realm, both physical and spiritual. Every demonic spirit, every power of darkness, every demon that has ever uttered a word against God, will one day bow before Him.

At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” (Philippians 2:10)

You don’t need to name the darkness to defeat it. You just need to know the Light of the World...Jesus.

Believers are told to resist (turn away from whatever the temptation) and away from the devil's influence. Doing so, under and by the authority of Jesus Christ, the devil and his demon followers shall flee from you. That is a promise from God, in James 4:7.

Do not intentionally entertain thoughts of sin. That's where it all starts, with just a thought, so catch that thought and turn away from it, before it materializes into sin. Resist the devil and sin, and Satan shall flee from you, but you have to do it by the authority of Jesus Christ. Demons don't fear you, and won't obey you, but they will obey Christ, and that is why we cast out demons in the name of Jesus and by His authority. Only then, will they flee.

I needed this....I don't know why but the enemy has taught me to stay away from the church... Due to an impure spirit that harrasses me will also harrass the innocent church members.. And I don't know how to get rid of it. So to protect the church I disobey Jesus and I don't go... Which makes me sad that I'm a part of the body not being used in the church itself! I do believe Matthew 16:15-15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18“I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. But I don't know how to apply it to my life, and my church, and the members and leaders of the churches... I feel so defeated but I want to have a breakthrough shed this impure spirit and all of the grace and gifts bestowed upon me would benefit the church with no problems... It's like when I prayed for my auntie to have a good week at work, she came to me sobbing because she had a really rough week at work? Like it got worse???? I feel defeated there too... I don't want to feel defeated! I want to rise above some way some how and not let fear dictate my life, but let the Lord be the Lord of my life instead!!!
@saintsong Dearest Sister in Christ. It sounds like yes, you're struggling quite a bit with a demonic influence, but you can't let it win. What I always do, is try to remember that Christ is greater than the demons. And you don't have demons in you, since you are a Christian. All they can do is try to influence you and we don't have to allow it. The Bible says greater Is God who is in you, then the devil who is in the world. Don't forget that. He has already defeated Satan, and Satan/demons can not do anything to you, unless you give them permission, and I know you don't do that. Those demons are not stronger than the Holy Spirit In you. They cannot control you, if you refuse to obey their lies or listen to them. Otherwise, the Bible would not say we are more than conquerors through Christ, who lives in us and loves us. We must not give them more power or credit than they have or deserve. We do not believe them over Christ. Christ is our Redeemer from demons. There's only one way to fight demons and that is to resist them and not allow them to put those negative thoughts in our mind. Resist the temptor, through Jesus Christ, who is stronger than any demons. Remember, that if you give in to what that devil is telling you about your life and yourself, then you'll be following demon's commands instead of Christ's and you do know how to say "no" to the devil. It becomes a matter of who we will believe, Christ, or demonic suggestions and influences. It also comes down to who we will serve. By giving into the threat of that demonic spirit that says if you go to church then I'm going to go with you and harrass the others, well that would happen anyway, regardless whether you go to church or not so don't listen to that. You know that's the truth. That demon just doesn't want you in church, period! They are liars and we don't follow Liars. We follow Christ and if we want to go to church we can go to church, regardless of any demons because they're going to be there anyway and you're being there will not make it any worse. That's the truth of Christ. Take up your cross and follow Christ, beloved sister. Be happy in Christ where you know you want to be, in his house and getting blessings and blessing others through your talents.

Christ will protect you when you go to his house. It takes a "no" from us, to resist them, then by the authority of Jesus Christ, to cast them out. The Bible says they have to flee at the name of Jesus. Jesus would want you to go to church anyway, in obedience to Christ, not at the suggestion of a demon, because when you think about it, those demons are going to be anywhere and everywhere regardless of whether you go to church or not, and just because you may go to church, there cannot be a demon inside you because you are Christ's and that demon will go anywhere and everywhere regardless if he's trying to influence you or not. We can't avoid those demons being where we don't want them but we don't have to allow them to control us to the point where we're afraid to go to church, because that demon is going to be anywhere and everywhere regardless of where you go. Those are areas where we have to trust Christ to take care of things in the spirit world that are trying to harass people. That's not our job. Whether we can control where they go or not, that should not keep any of us from being faithful to our Lord and Savior. That spirit that is harassing you is simply wanting to keep you away from God's house and hearing the word from the Holy Spirit. It doesn't want you to have peace in the Lord. It wants you to become fearful and fear does not come from God. I know that you know that. Anything that that Spirit tells you like you're bad or you're going to make people have to fight demons, it's just a lie from the Devil. That's what he would say, not Christ. So we must listen to Christ and his promises. We have to remember that we have two choices. We can listen to the devil and be miserable, or we can listen to Christ and go on with our life, right? We can trust Christ that he will take care of the things of the spirit world. As we trust Christ, we can give those things over to Christ and he will take care of that. Christians are exposed to Demons every day because they want to keep us away from Christ and his church the best they can by any means available that they think will work on you so we must not ever listen to them. We must let Christ fight for us. We are covered by his blood. His blood is not so watered down and Powerless, that demons can have victory over us. They just want to keep us out of God's house and you know in your heart that is not right, so you must follow Christ regardless and just trust him to take care of everything. He always has and he always will. It is our hope that is in Christ. We are not hopeless or helpless. Claim the victory over an unclean spirit, through Christ and then let that go and let Christ handle it because he's better prepared and better equipped to do that in the spiritual world. Then don't let those thoughts come in again. And yes, you even said it yourself. Demons do want to keep us out of church and especially yourself with your talents, so that you can't use them, and so others won't be glorified and blessed by your talents. Do not allow that. Defy them in the name of Jesus and go to church anyway, because we're not serving demons. We're serving Christ, and it is His will that we do not forsake the gathering of ourselves together in the house of the Lord. Whether you're in church or not, Christians are going to fight demons every day, whether it's the demon that influences you or anybody else. They are there to torment and when we give them the victory, we're letting them win without a fight and allowing them to take our power away from us in Christ. We don't have to do that. We are not without hope and we are not without Christ's Holy Spirit power within us. Do not let them scare you away from church. We believe in trust in Christ, over and above demons. Do not allow demons to steal your joy. Fear comes from them, not God. We don't have to listen to them. I love you sister and I'll be praying for you. I hope this helped. We are no longer slaves to sin or demonic influences. We are a free and New Creation in Christ and we can count on that because that's a promise from God. He does not want us in torment but he has told us how to conquer those things. Do not allow yourself to hear the thoughts when they start coming from that negative and defeating spirit. We're not going that way. We're moving forward in Christ, and free from the spirit of fear.
@saintsong I do want to say sister that I believe you'll have to put off that demonic influence just like you would any other negative influence that may try to come into your life by whatever person or entity. Just don't allow it. Don't entertain that spirit's suggestions. Don't give them more power than they have or deserve. Remember, it's just a suggestion by them and we do not have to allow it to affect us. Like anything else we can turn away from it. Refuse to allow it in our lives. What we want to do is follow Christ and he will take care of the rest.

Think about it this way. If a robber came into your house and you knew he was there and you had a gun to protect yourself, but you allowed him to go ahead and just take anything he wanted and destroy your house, who would be to blame? We can apply the same, to spiritual things. If we allow things that we don't want in our lives, then we'll get what we've always gotten. We can not allow it. It is true that we get what we allow, no matter who the Christian. We must be there for Mindful and on guard in the Spirit, as the Bible says. We don't have to be defeated. No matter what comes or when it comes, just keep going on and doing for Jesus. No matter how many times, rebuke the bad spirits and cast them out in the name of Jesus. He says we have that power and as Heirs of Christ, we do. You're not fighting this battle alone, sister. I have battles as well and I'm praying for you and I ask you to pray for me. God never said it would be easy, and it's not, but he did say he would be with us to help us and see us through. He keeps his promises. We must keep the faith.

We can trust Him to help us and keep us under His wings. I love you sister.

@LadyGrace Thank you kindly for the encouragement and strength to rise above!!! This site is blessed to have you here, I am blessed to have your insight and you are a true treasure to this site!! I think I'm going to be okay...
@saintsong I think you will, honey. I'm praying for you and I know you can get through this. The Lord is always by your side to help you. I know when I have challenges like this, I asked myself who do I want to please, the Lord, or other influences? That really helps because I know how deeply and strongly you love the Lord so when it hurts to get those voices trying to tempt you to turn the other way, just say to yourself no, I want to love and serve the Lord and I'm going to do that, regardless of what other things are trying to steer me away from my close fellowship to the Lord. I love you dearly sister. You're one of the few here that truly so deeply love the Lord and stand for him and are faithful to him. I'm proud to call you my sister in the Lord. And I know the Lord is so proud of you. I admire your strength and faithfulness to him. God bless you, Sister. ❤🫂🙏
