Why are there different versions of the 10 Commandments?

Whenever I google it, I will either get a list where the second Commandment is to not use the Lord's name in vain; or it will be not to create false idols; or it will be to not wear any graven images, and if its one of the last two, the third one will be to not use the Lord's name in vain.

Because of that, I have to rule out translation problems.

Some lists include not coveting the neighbor's wife along with not coveting his stuff. Others have wife on her own commandment.

Also, is the New Testament just a rewrite of the Old Testament? ..or are they two totally different books with totally different stories in each one? If thats the case, does the Old Testament allude to the New Testament at all? Is Jesus Christ mentioned in both books?

Let me guess the catholic religion supports the version where the law about not making graven images has been removed..

Here is the 10 commandments as shown in the King James Bible..

(Exodus 20:1-17) "And God spake all these words, saying, {2} I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. {3} Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

{4} Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: {5} Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; {6} And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

{7} Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

{8} Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. {9} Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: {10} But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: {11} For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

{12} ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

{13} Thou shalt not kill.

{14} Thou shalt not commit adultery.

{15} Thou shalt not steal.

{16} Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

{17} Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s."

@Adstar Does 'any graven image, or any likeness' refer to 3 dimensional representations only or does it also cover paintings and glass windows and other 2D icons? There are a variety of positions on this question held by various Christian sects.
Also: What do you make of the commandment in Exodus 25:18 to create the cherubim to adorn the Arc of the Covenant?
The iconoclast controversy was in any case settled by the Second Council of Nicaea in 787.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Adstar you get it. Why wouldn't the graven images be on RC's list of the 10 Commandments 🤔

The set of laws inscribed on the second set of tablets that Moses brought back from his third trip up the mountain, listed in Exodus 34:28 and Deuteronomy 4:13 (a retelling of Exodus 34), is the only set called the Ten Commandments. It is quite revealing to read Exodus 34: “And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest. And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai…”

The final authorized, edited and proofed version of the Ten Commandments:

1. Thou shalt worship no other god.

2. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

3. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep.

4. Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest.

5. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks.

6. Thrice in the year shall all your menchildren appear before the Lord
God.

7. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven.

8. Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left until
the morning.

9. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house
of the Lord thy God.

10. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.

@BlueSkyKing wow! Ive never heard of most of these. What are their purpose? They seem very specific, not so much for the masses. Where are they written? Old testament? I realize you said Exodus and Deuteronomy. But i wasn't raised with any religion. I dont know which book those came from.

I guess the one about no molten gods is the one about false idols on other lists?

I think you missed the joke. Joseph and Jesus were carpenters (wood workers). In the Old Testament wood workers created idols out of wood. And, in the end, the Jesus character became an idol on a wooden cross.

2 Chronicles 24:18 (NKJV) = "Therefore they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols; and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their trespass."

Hosea 4:12 (NKJV) = "My people ask counsel from their wooden idols, And their staff informs them. For the spirit of harlotry has caused them to stray, And they have played the harlot against their God."

People still worship that idol today.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Diotrephes no. I really didn't miss the joke. That was my whole reason for the post. ..its why i discovered (for me) that there were different versions of the 10 Commandments. ..JC is also quite a graven image too, isn't he?

I decided not to mention those discrepancies out of respect to all who were so generous with their time and sharing their wisdom.

Another joke is how the ones who brutally murdered JC, became the most stonch supporters of his

I wonder what the devil has been up to these past two millennia? What if he has been slowly persuading mankind to break God's heart
You might start with some simple looking up of basic info.

@SomeMichGuy hey man, nobody's forcing you to reply.

You're right. It would be too hard to read the article at this time. I'm not the type to take in anything just because it's written. Especially if it's written on Wikipedia. So there would be a lot of research id have to do on the author of the article.

If I'm guilty of engaging in fuckery, then you, sir, are guilty of it too. But I have a feeling you either don't see it that way, or you excuse yourself because you're comfortable with your motives.

@Diotrephes wow! Thanks! That was an awesome comment. Was all that from the old testament?

Wasn't the new testament written closer to our current time than when the old testament was written?
Well first off you have two different versions in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. Then you have the Catholic Vulgate versus a million other Protestant translations and I would not be surprised if the Orthodox bible is different yet again on this too.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow yea, but as i stated in a different reply, i dont understand how they could have been that far off since they came down with Moses, a Jew, thousands of years before Christianity, ..as i understand it..
@Jayciedubb Except there is no evidence it is literal. We have 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hand accounts from thousands of years ago and then selected to fit a new religion at the time.

The bible is also not a coherent text. It is a collection of vaguely associated written texts that are vaguely connected based on a Jewish new religion at the time.

Some texts included are mythology (like most if not all of Exodus), written accounts years after the people involved were dead and in the case of Corinthians you have letters from Paul that would be like the equivalent of having your emails added to a religious text.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow yea, i get that. It's kinda human nature, just like everything else in nature, to create and follow paths of least resistance.

Similiar behavior still occurs today. Control the masses with fear. Blame the boogyman. I've always questioned questionable behavior and run a scenario based on the latest narratives i face from time to time. Its funny when "they're" faced with the flaws in "their" own logic.

I have so many funny anecdotes bubbling up as im writing, i don't know where to go with them while remaining on topic..

What i wanted to say is that i understand why the stories must be so dramatic. I'm sure it had to be even more dramatic back in the day, when life was much cheaper. Some people can't be nice for the sake of peace. They have to be threatened by the boogyman constantly or they might become the boogeyman
Because there are different versions of religion.
"Because the Lord Thy God hath freed thee from slavery and given thee free Will, therefore shalt thou not kill! "
That's too specific for Americans are and too correct, so they took parts out!
onewithshoes · 26-30, F
The differences are mostly in the way they are divided up for numbering.
The same thing happens with different versions of the the Psalms.
Anniedlr · 26-30, F
Because there are various sects within Christendom who interpret things differently
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Anniedlr that's what I'm having a hard time with. The 10 Commandments were literally written in stone. Brought down from Mt Sinai (?) by Moses. ..a Jew. Christianity was still thousands of years away. I dont know what the purpose would be of omitting or rearranging them. 🤔 ..except maybe the one about graven images, and about false idols.
@pentagrammom Stop it. Dial 988.
@Jayciedubb Read the Wikipedia article.
H6pocite list of the author's behaviors is all that iscommand language from toppressive fictional ggeneric character guidebook
@pentagrammom Save it for your crazy "statements"...
@SomeMichGuy have that handled, and blh, blah, blah, please get some rest, I have the situation handled

Nearly everything in the Bible is ambiguous. It's made up of a hodgepodge of tales and lore.
