Why are there different versions of the 10 Commandments?

Whenever I google it, I will either get a list where the second Commandment is to not use the Lord's name in vain; or it will be not to create false idols; or it will be to not wear any graven images, and if its one of the last two, the third one will be to not use the Lord's name in vain.

Because of that, I have to rule out translation problems.

Some lists include not coveting the neighbor's wife along with not coveting his stuff. Others have wife on her own commandment.

Also, is the New Testament just a rewrite of the Old Testament? ..or are they two totally different books with totally different stories in each one? If thats the case, does the Old Testament allude to the New Testament at all? Is Jesus Christ mentioned in both books?

Let me guess the catholic religion supports the version where the law about not making graven images has been removed..

Here is the 10 commandments as shown in the King James Bible..

(Exodus 20:1-17) "And God spake all these words, saying, {2} I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. {3} Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

{4} Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: {5} Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; {6} And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

{7} Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

{8} Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. {9} Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: {10} But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: {11} For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

{12} ¶ Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

{13} Thou shalt not kill.

{14} Thou shalt not commit adultery.

{15} Thou shalt not steal.

{16} Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

{17} Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s."

@Adstar The prohibitions against idols found in Exodus 20:4 and repeated in Deuteronomy 5:8 are fully included in the Vulgate as well as in the Douay-Rheims and all other Catholic versions of the Bible, and the chapter and verse numbering is also the same. Only the catechetical division into separate commandments is different.

@onewithshoes I was born into a catholic family, a sunday mass church going family who Never missed a sunday or other ""holy day of obligation"" and in EVERY catholic church i entered into was a cross with a graven image of Jesus afixed to it.. So if the catholic bibles do have the law against graven images then that shows that the catholic religion is in open rebellion against the LORD.. by breaking His commandment..
@Adstar No.

You have to read that phrase in context. The end of that is to not worship such "graven" images.

If you want to fault some Catholics for that...that's a different matter.

@SomeMichGuy """"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth""""

The Law is clear do not make ANY graven images.. Making graven images of Jesus is a clear breaking of this Law.. irrespective of one worshiping or not worshiping that image.. The law is already broken by making an image..
@Adstar No.

You are using the beginning of a thought. Show the complete thing; here is the text YOU gave:

{4} Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: {5} Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; {6} And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
(Emphasis added.)

Reading includes understanding punctuation. The colon after the "don't do this" shows the importance of the following info, which explains the context for the first clauses.

@SomeMichGuy Yeah you can reject the truth and place your trust in the traditions of men who are in open rebellion against Gods word.. But when it comes to the final judgement no amount of denial and arguing against God will save them from judgement..
@Adstar You are rejecting the truth as it is recorded.

But I'd check out Jesus' requirement for salvation. lmao

@SomeMichGuy Jesus is the Lamb of God and just like the Original Passover Lamb one must consume all it's flesh and make use of it's blood for a covering so that the angel of death will pass over your house on the night of Passover.. The meat represents the teachings of the LORD and the Blood represents the Atonement of the LORD which pays the penalty for ones transgressions against the teachings of the LORD.. When one rejects the teachings of the LORD like the making of graven images and declares it to be good what the LORD has declared to be against His will.. That person is No longer covered by the Blood of the Atonement for that transgression because they have not believed in the Word of the LORD.. Jesus said::

(John 6:53-57) "Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. {54} Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. {55} For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. {56} He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. {57} As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me."
@Adstar lol

I have partaken.

Jesus also says something much simpler, but I can see from whence you come...
Adstar · 56-60, M
@SomeMichGuy No you have rejected Gods Word and have replaced Him with another jesus another gospel.. One that rejects the Word of God and conforms to the traditions of men..
@Adstar No.

I embrace Jesus' various statements, which you've likely heard but ignore.

You're a Judaizing Christian, likely, but a "religious Right" guy, evidently.
Adstar · 56-60, M
@SomeMichGuy Your false allogations and slander are noted.. Your mocking laughter was also noted.. I will hand you over to the LORD.. He will deal with you.. His will be done and may you be forgiven..
@Adstar

Your false allogations[sic]

No idea what an "allogation" is; is it a turd emitted by an alligator?

Leaving judgment to the Lord is wise. The Good News is that He wants relationship over judgment.

@Adstar Does 'any graven image, or any likeness' refer to 3 dimensional representations only or does it also cover paintings and glass windows and other 2D icons? There are a variety of positions on this question held by various Christian sects.
Also: What do you make of the commandment in Exodus 25:18 to create the cherubim to adorn the Arc of the Covenant?
The iconoclast controversy was in any case settled by the Second Council of Nicaea in 787.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Adstar you get it. Why wouldn't the graven images be on RC's list of the 10 Commandments 🤔
Adstar · 56-60, M
@onewithshoes Graven images are carved or molded 3 D statues..

Also: What do you make of the commandment in Exodus 25:18 to create the cherubim to adorn the Arc of the Covenant?

They made Seraphim that is 6 winged cherubim angels.. But apart from that. It was a direct order of God to make them so in that case the LAW was canceled.. This was not an order to now make graven images when ever you want of whom so ever you wanted..

In my opinion the Bible settles things.. God is the Austerity not men..
@Adstar

God is the Austerity not men..
