Harrier jump jets were my faves when I was a kid but I saw a raptor do a vertical take off this year and it was amazing :)
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@Kuronekko: indeed!
Gumba1000 · M
@Kuronekko: I remember a harrier being flown by Arnold Shwartzenegger in a film. Solidified my liking.

@PaintedVeil: good choice on the F-15E.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@76starships: thanks and i love it even more after i heard about the israeli landed in one winged F-15E in 1981 :)
Jpfunjunky · 41-45, M
I like the A-10 warthog. Why? Because BRRRAAAPPPP!!!!
Livingwell · 61-69, M
My favorite of all time.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
GREAT choice!

I guess the oxcart, just cuz it's basically a sr 71 blackbird refitted a little. and the blackbird seems like a wild kinda plane.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@onestarrynight: yes it is <-- (omg! sorry i thought you were talking about my respond) lol...

@onestarrynight: the 71 is, the yf 12.. whatever had armaments.

Other way around. The A12 was first and the SR-71 was built after. The A-12 was the faster and higher flying of the two because of weight
F-4 Phantom ... long service multiple roles ... payloads ... dogfighting ... and carrier launched
Had to have been the best
F-14 is next
French Mirage
Russian Migs are last ... pour record in an aspects of battle

how about Eurofighter Typhoon?
Typhoon has performed well in combat. ....looks real cool.
Needs to get out of its comfort zone to see how it stacks up overall.
It does have payload!

Agreed. The Phantom looks tough too. Undoubtedly the best of its time and even by today's standards it's still great.
F16...most beautiful fighter ever built. Single engine blaster

way too much and waaaaaay too long :D

@SteveHamm: they should cut thier losses and scrap the platform
@onestarrynight: totally...like 50s jets. It's politics.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
I have no favorite fighter jet. The infantry is the queen of the battlefield.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@Gumba1000: No worries. I am not arguing either. I just try to make an imporant point, which most people are not aware of.
Allthingscurious · 46-50, M
Modern technology has removed the need for those "low and slow" CAS runs needed to identify troops.
Allthingscurious · 46-50, M
@Mugin16: yourbpoint about the current priority and capabilities of the fighter world couldn't. E further from the truth. The release of the F-16 in the 70s began a major shift to multi-roll fighters. Every fighter jet since has been produced with the best ATG capabilities. We have r had a legitimate ATA threat in years and the top brass most certainly does consider CAS and overall ATG combat to be of the utmost importance.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
F-22 Raptor. Best fighter yet created.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
@HoraceGreenley: damn. I was never on the Saratoga but on the Independence which was the same class so damn he was a hardworking man.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Scubaguy027: Sounds like something a Navy guy would say!

Sweepers, sweepers, man your brooms.

F-18 then the GR1 Tornado. Tough, dependable, lots of firepower.
The 18 is a great plane bt really a hold over until next generation figher technology
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
I like F-18 too <3
Also the mustang..pinnacle of WWII fighter power and had kills again German late war jet
76starships · 46-50, M
MiG-29 FULCRUM. I built model kits of Soviet and Western fighters as a kid, and that one was one of my favorites. It came out the best, so I've always had a soft spot for it.
76starships · 46-50, M
Cool, love a lady that's into warplanes.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@76starships: thanks, they fascinate me, to be honest. amazing what a man can do!

It's also a very beautiful airplane. Though it's performance is like an F16 without the advanced digital avionics.

Love the F22 - no fighter so far dominates the battle space quite the same way.
P-51 Mustang - most decisive WW2 Fighter - protected the bombers that won the bombing campaign, and best combination of aerial characteristics.
Supermarine Spitfire: won the most decisive air battle in history, and is the most beautiful of the WW2 fighters; proved very versatile and continued development for 4-5 years after the war.
F4U Corsair (variants): best fighter/bomber combination of WW2, beloved by its pilots and had one of the most enduring careers deep into the jet age.

you are a classic lover arent you? :) I'm not too familiar with "old" birds but I just got this aircraft history book and I'm gonna study it! 🤓

Well... yes... I am, and an aviation enthusiast in general.

I am partial to the Sabre, love the styling and look of it!
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
well I am glad! :D
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
Although I must admit, this is the first time I am introduced to F-86 Sabre lol... thank you!
wyolatex · 41-45, M
Your welcome!
F15 was a beast and could fly with half a gd wing blown off.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
omg YES! have you seen the F-15 back in the 80's that flew with one wing only? that's crazy yet cool at the same time :D
Yeah in think it was Israeli. They didn't know it could do that!
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@SteveHamm: yes the israeli. good thing he didnt know that or he would eject his seat then we will never know

Newfrommars · 46-50, M
@PaintedVeil: not many people recognize it as Mig series was better known although overall Sukhi could out perform Mig 29...
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
funny you should mention Mig 29 as I just mentioned it in PM.. Bulgarian for me though :D

From the simple standpoint of combat effectiveness, nothing beats the 3 US Radial Engine mid WW2 fighters - the P47 and F4U were adequate in air-to-air and dominant in ground attack roles and the F6F gutted the Japanese Naval Air Arm.
The follow-up P51 may be the best pure dogfighter ever.

Just as an amateur historian
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
@Patrickp1969: this is something new for me to learn. Thank you for sharing!
SW-User
Interesting question...I never thought of it. I must say I love the F22... it looks like the ultimate flying machine, with Supercruise, stealth, and superb systems. As a pure fighter jet, though, one has to admire the F16 for it's multi-functional capability and sheer good looks, and the Korean Era F-86, as a pure (good-looking) gun slinger.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
F-22 😍

French Rafale seems missing from the entire list!
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
You are right 😀 Thanks for including this handsome bird 😏
Livingwell · 61-69, M
I also like the Su-27. Beautiful bird.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
I agree!!
LoveChild · 26-30, F
Boeing X-32. It had simplicity of design, a lower price tag, and far greater vertical stability than the X-35. The X-35 was only chosen over it because it looked prettier and more menacing.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
Lucy!! good point! :D
LoveChild · 26-30, F
McDonnell-Douglas does make pretty planes. I'm a pilot btw.
Scubaguy027 · 46-50, M
F/A-18F Super Hornet. That's what I worked on in the Navy. In the right hands its the deadliest thing in the sky. Before all the Raptor babies start talking trash, one of my pilots took one with the gun in a Red Flag.
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
Thats uber cool!
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
Everytime I see the F-22 fly I am totally amazed. Makes me intrigued on how good the F-35 will really be when fully opertional, but damn the F-22 simply blows me away
PaintedVeil · 41-45, F
Gotta love the Raptors 😍
BearDownChicago · 41-45, M
DAMN that is a sexy jet
