Does the U S. Army offer good travel opportunities?

I was told that if you sign up for the U.S Army and complete your basic training, you will assigned duty at a location that they determine.I was also told that, assuming you completed your intial tour satisfactorly and you werent an active solider fighting in a direct action, you could pick the country you wished to serve in if you re-enlisted.Is this true?
Best advice I can a young man that is considering joining the military is to make the Air Force their 1st option. Find you a job/school that interests you that will transfer over to a career when your enlistment is up.

Air Force has the best living conditions of all the military branches. Rank isn't as easy to obtain but the schooling is worth a lot more in the long run. You can just about bank on 3 hot meals and clean sheets daily!

Whatever you decide, get it in writing from the recruiter.

Most importantly, if you do decide to go the military route, whatever branch, from DAY ONE, save every document that passes through your hands. Make copies for safekeeping if necessary. You may find later in life when dealing with Veterans Affairs that some of your records are missing from your files and you can produce them to prove for example that you were seen on sick call for such and such or treated at the base hospital for an illness. Whatever, later in life you may have a disability claim for a service-connected disability through the VA and you have proof you were treated.

Good Luck!
@DavidT8899 I actually just got laid off from a company this year that had an extraordinary method of manufacturing ammunition with an extraordinary machine gun but regardless they didn't get the contract because it wasn't a company as established as another.

So no matter good idea or not there are many other factors involved in winning a military contract.

@OliviaOfTheNight I mean if you invent something extraordinary WHILE AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE SERVICE.
@DavidT8899 yea you wont get anything
You can definitely get a duty station in your contract as far as the US is concerned but as far as anything outside the US, you probably cannot get that in your contract.

Also depending on the things you decide to do while in the army they can totally change your duty station on you. For example, I was originally supposed to do all my time in Korea but after I went to airborne school they just sent me to Fort Bragg and that is where I stayed for the duration of my enlistment.

When you reenlist you can sometimes negotiate a new duty station overseas but it is really more dependent on the needs of the army. The only time you really have a choice on things is when you first enlist. But overseas options are usually not an option you can choose unless you are rushing to go to a warzone then yea if you really want to see blood, they will be happy to bend rules to put you there.

@OliviaOfTheNight But I was told that if you sign up for a non-combat school major, you wont go into a combat zone as a solider.
@DavidT8899 No that is total bullshit.

I signed up to be a Mechanic and I was attached to a unit of parachute packers.

My parachute packing unit went to Iraq and did missions manning turrets on the top of armored vehicles. It had nothing to do with their MOS but it doesn't matter.

Don't join the Army if you think you can avoid combat. You cannot. Eventually if you stay in long enough you will find it.

Anyways, that being said you will probably live anyways. We are talking about being in the US Army not the Afghan Army. You might be injured but even during the Iraq war my odds were only 1 in 20 of dying. Now the US isn't even at war so your odds are even better.
@DavidT8899 Cooks are needed in in war zones.

Army, you are an infantryman 1st.

Its called Basic Combat Training for a reason.

It sounds like you should be a holiday rep rather than join the military
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
@Morvoren And what exactly is that?
The Army is good for travel, but it is really kind of luck of the draw, unless you are simply looking to just get out of your state and into another one.

It was one of the two best things I ever did for myself. The other one is getting my engineering degree.

All depends on your MOS and which unit you get assigned to. Want more opportunities, try for an 11B (infantry). Try to get an OP40 contract and get your wings to get in an Airborne unit. Maybe even get your Ranger Scroll.
You know.. they just itching to put boots on the ground in Ukraine.
Fancy a summer in Europe?
