Does the U S. Army offer good travel opportunities?

I was told that if you sign up for the U.S Army and complete your basic training, you will assigned duty at a location that they determine.I was also told that, assuming you completed your intial tour satisfactorly and you werent an active solider fighting in a direct action, you could pick the country you wished to serve in if you re-enlisted.Is this true?

You can definitely get a duty station in your contract as far as the US is concerned but as far as anything outside the US, you probably cannot get that in your contract.

Also depending on the things you decide to do while in the army they can totally change your duty station on you. For example, I was originally supposed to do all my time in Korea but after I went to airborne school they just sent me to Fort Bragg and that is where I stayed for the duration of my enlistment.

When you reenlist you can sometimes negotiate a new duty station overseas but it is really more dependent on the needs of the army. The only time you really have a choice on things is when you first enlist. But overseas options are usually not an option you can choose unless you are rushing to go to a warzone then yea if you really want to see blood, they will be happy to bend rules to put you there.

@goneNow6565 But I was told that if you sign up for a non-combat school major, you wont go into a combat zone as a solider.
@DavidT8899 No that is total bullshit.

I signed up to be a Mechanic and I was attached to a unit of parachute packers.

My parachute packing unit went to Iraq and did missions manning turrets on the top of armored vehicles. It had nothing to do with their MOS but it doesn't matter.

Don't join the Army if you think you can avoid combat. You cannot. Eventually if you stay in long enough you will find it.

Anyways, that being said you will probably live anyways. We are talking about being in the US Army not the Afghan Army. You might be injured but even during the Iraq war my odds were only 1 in 20 of dying. Now the US isn't even at war so your odds are even better.
@DavidT8899 Cooks are needed in in war zones.

Army, you are an infantryman 1st.

Its called Basic Combat Training for a reason.
