This crushing price hike as overwhelmingly been driven by massive price hikes in natural gas, coal, and oil -- assets which have always been volatile in price (to varying degrees). We should address it by switching to other power sources, a change we could make through tax credits and municipal reform. In addition, we should give out a tax credit for heat pump installation & have a government-run campaign to increase accessibility of these energy efficient systems. We should further reduce the demand for oil by switching to low-oil or no-oil transportation system, such as bike, rail, and pedestrian infrastructure. This would involve changing the zoning codes to make these types of transport more practical.
Most of these changes would take a long time to effectively enact, unfortunately. In the short term, we could repeal the Jones Act of 1920, an archaic protectionist law which makes it much more expensive to ship between US ports. This law both makes it harder for the US to consume its own oil and increases the number of trucks on our roads. And among the infrastructure changes, some would be pretty easy like putting up barriers for protected bike lanes, painting on some bus lanes, and running those same buses more frequently.
Crazy, how much we could do to address this problem if we had some american unity for once, but sadly these things are seen as partisan footballs and very little movement ever gets made as a result.

It's almost like critically depending on terroristic states for the supply of fuels and thus the production of energy wasn't the smartest move.
This had been called for decades. Nobody cared. We'll care about it now I guess.

@Elessar here in uk, nuclear was kyboshed by the coalition. Lib dems said in 2010 that 5 years was too long to wait. Got 5p for plastic carrier bags though. Nick bloody Clegg.
Renewable tax (uk again) is 25%. Its not doing what it says on the tin. Its supposed to be abundant and cheaper.
We cannot wait for new power structures. What can we do? I keep asking because i am unsure

How much are Energy prices going up there? I don't think we have anything like that coming to the United States but I'm sure some weird doomsayer like dippy Joe we'll say otherwise but anyway how much are they going up in the uk?

As it’s all going to plan, you shouldn’t do anything. Once many have died from cold and starvation, the government will start phase 2 to get rid of the rest.
Some of the comments on this post shows who the socialists are. That’s the bloody problem ... socialists/communists. This is why the world is being destroyed, and yet the socialists add to the poverty. Take the blinkers off. It’s rich vs poor. They want your money. They want your property, and they want you gone.

The rapacious greed of the left wing for political power drove Europeans to ignore Trump's continuous warnings against becoming dependent on Russian energy. Now it's time to pay the price.
Here is the German delegation laughing at Trump's UN speech warning about dependency on Russian energy (2018):

@irishmolly72 its not a left/right issue

It's simple; get somebody at Ofgem that can do the job better than those idiots who are there now. They initially drove power companies to bankruptcy and are now letting those who remain destroy the country with their greed.
How fucking hard is that job? Basic numeracy should see you alright.

Don’t know perhaps a windfall tax, but i do know its going to get worse when most peoples money is being spent on keeping warm and not spread round rest of the economy .
gol979 · 41-45, M
@Barny52 heard the windfall tax idea but thats skimming around the issue imo. If government can impose a tax then they can implement laws/policy saying energy companies cannot overcharge as we need energy to survive.
Im not for government intervention but when the energy market is so controlled what other option is there. Eg of controlled market, in the uk its very difficult to change company, comparison sites have removed all energy companies and many energy companies are not accepting new customers. Something very dodgy is going on
