I don't believe in it as a cosmic force that will inevitably return good or bad fortune.

I do believe that people who receive kindness are more likely to give kindness and those given misery are more likely to be apathetic to the misery of others. And thus while there is nothing pushing behavior back at you personally, the energy you put out into the world impacts that world and makes it just a little more likely for you to experience the same from others.
