How many people know a base runner can tag up and advance on a fly ball caught in foul territory?

It happened in a game the other night and over half the people didn't know it wasn't against the rules! That also got me thinking, that it isn't common for that to happen. Most people had never seen it happen.

Ooo, ooo, ME!!! That's why sometimes a fielder will let a ball drop in foul territory if the runner on third might tag up and score on the play.

@WizardofOz NO ONE seems to care about the catcher being outside the box -- or usually the batter being outside the batter's box, either. I guess it's "progress" -- sort of like the way no one calls palming, travelling, or turning the ball over in the NBA these days.

@ChipmunkErnie I actually watched a video on how what is considered"traveling" has changed through the years. It is actually ridiculous! They showed players running from mid court with the ball palmed! I'm not a huge basketball fan but that had me rolling my eyes.

It doesn't typically happen because the throw isn't as long. You'll see it more on deep balls to the right side with a runner on second. Sometimes from first with a right handed right fielder.. It's also why you don't see guys dive as much in deep foul territory with a runner on base. Makes the throw harder.

Of course. I have seen it happen in the World Series.

Do you know when a strikeout isn’t an out?

Do you know when the infield fly rule is and is not applicable?
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@RedBaron A strike out isn't an out when the catcher doesn't cleanly field the ball on third strike. The catcher can throw the batter out at first, however. The infield fly rule is another story, a lot of it has to do with the judgment of the crew.

@WizardofOz But it also depends on how many outs there are and which bases are occupied.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@RedBaron I know, I didn't wanna get to specific because I type slow.

It happened the other night in KC with a Blue Jay runner tagging on first then making it to second on a foul ball caught way up the first base line.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@RenFur I honestly can't remember the last time I saw it happen. Shit, I can't remember the last time I saw someone tag up on first on a fly ball. Lol
exexec · 61-69, C
Yep. I scored the winning run that way inn high school.
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@exexec That's cool! It amazed me that people thought it basically made it a dead ball just because it's foul. I asked them, "If it counts as an out, why wouldn't runners be allowed to advance"?

Sorry but I know nothing about cricket 😂😂
WizardofOz · 26-30, M
@Anniedlr I don't either, other than they chirp at night and are a good source of protein. They also taste better dipped in chocolate!

@Anniedlr Gov. Noem shot her.
Vin53 · M
A foul ball is still a ball in play once its caught.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Vin53 Caught in the air. ;)
Vin53 · M
@ChipmunkErnie Yes. As opposed to fielded.

I probably knew 40 years ago, but thanks for the reminder! Seems odd.
