My ex says I am attractive but I am not conventionally beautiful, like the type in magazines. How should I take this?

We were just catching up and chatting. Is that really a bad thing? He went on to say the beauty surrounds me and that I am pretty but not the common type ...it was a struggle until he didn't want to talk about it anymore

It sounds he's saying you're beautiful but not in some common, conventional way, that you're unique and special.

Sounds like he was trying to tell you that you're special to him.

"Conventionally beautiful" to me just means fake as hell. Photoshopped and all that. Maybe he didn't mean it that same way but I would take it as a complement personally.

The types in magazines are not conventionally beautiful. They are not conventional at all. They are fictions created in photoshop.
