Wanting to get back into creating art but feel more or less blocked inspirationally which is frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas or ways of going about getting inspired again? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. I almost feel a block emotionally and I don't know exactly know how to go about releasing or figuring out exactly what it is. <3

Take a break, do something else.

I'm not an artist but a software developer and electronics engineer and I often had similar problems in that I couldn't make decisions about which approach to use to solve a problem and couldn't motivate myself to think up better ways of solving problems. I would be in a state where I'd be just staring at a sheet of paper or a screen getting nothing done.

Sometimes it was enough to to just get away from my desk and go for a walk in the sunshine and think about something else, or indeed nothing at all. Coming back to my desk after half an hour in the fresh air I would sometimes have the solution spring almost fully formed from my fingers to the paper or keyboard even though I hadn't been consciously thinking about the problem.

It has sometimes been necessary to just drop the problem entirely for days, on occasion for weeks.

Something that might also help is this: I found it easier to push myself into creating novel solutions when I was working than I do now that I am retired. Deadlines and the feeling that others are depending on me finding inspiration helped prevent me demanding perfection rather than performance. Now that I have only myself to satisfy it is easy to feel that none of it is worth working on and I get much less done.

So perhaps you should try creating a deadline or some other need to get something done. You could offer to create something for someone else.

Does any of that sound useful?

I have another idea, prompted by @LordShadowfire's and @SarahAndSamantha's replies: do something small that you can show us here on SW. Doesn't have to be anything grand, or original, or even finished.

@ninalanyon I really enjoyed reading your lengthy post and in that I found inspiration. I'll give it a try of creating a deadline for some non existent project because when you are doing something and you don't really have a cause it can feel completely pointless. I'll consider posting something, thank you, it sounds fun.

@Tryingnewthings Glad I could help! Looking forward to some pictures or at least a few words about how it goes.

I don't know what kind of art you do, but for me I'll just grab some clay and start sculpting random shapes, no real goal in mind, not really paying attention, just doing it to do it. Eventually, the clay kinda tells me what to do.

@SarahAndSamantha Yes! I have definitely had that experience with creating music and it is so magical.

What kind of artwork do you do? Metal welding, sculpting, clay, paint, draw, crafts, dance, music?

Whatever your area you do take a class or go to an art show of those type of things you do to see what others create and then set a plan on what you would like to create off of what you saw/learned.
Tryingnewthings · 26-30, F
@WillaKissing Painting, drawing, music, and sometimes dance. I am really considering/looking into it. Hopefully will find something nearby soon.

@Tryingnewthings Good luck.

I completely believe that new experiences and crossing personal boundaries on your own terms is what inspire artists. It's really difficult to feel inspired when life becomes mundane, and every day looks the same.
Tryingnewthings · 26-30, F
@Blanchy Definitely, it just can be hard sometimes when you are living life day to day and you are more introverted. Takes courage that's for sure.
Look at what other people are doing, ideally in person and talk to them. Or wander off into new things you've never done before, bonus if you have wanted to for a long time
Tryingnewthings · 26-30, F
@stound Yes, that sound like a really good idea.
What type of art do you create : visual ? Written? What?

Ive had a creative block myself for a few years - and its driving me nutz its so frustrating.

Ive recently got on an AI art gernerator to try and create images that inspire me ....to copy at least🤷
@SarahAndSamantha ive gone from prompting my own....to just cruising others creations.
Its BLOWING MY MIND what is out there 👀🤩
Tryingnewthings · 26-30, F
@OogieBoogie Painting, drawing, and creating music. That's interesting. I've haven't thought about doing that. I almost feel repelled by AI.
@Tryingnewthings yup.
I can understand that .

I see it as using AI to visualize my ideas when i can't.
Its like hunting images online for ideas - but AI generators let you be more specific.

The 10th and 11th will be great times to get back to your art.
Tryingnewthings · 26-30, F
@Greyjedi What is special about those dates?

@Tryingnewthings Venus and Uranus are in are in complimentary signs and their are a lot of Pisces objects in the solar system. Pisces is great for getting inspiration and pursuing creative and joyful endeavors.

@LordShadowfire That is really good advice. I've definitely had that experience of forcing myself and being pleasantly surprised by the end of it.
