That is a spotted lanternfly. If you see one, you're probably infested with them. They are not harmful to people, but they devastate crops and a lot of trees and other plants. They pee all over your yard and car, and it attracts bees and wasps, besides messing everything up.

@AbbeyRhode That's the first one I've ever seen, then coming home from work, I stopped at a gas station and saw one there as well. Looks like Va has a problem too now.

Why are the bugs so much bigger in the south? Lol
Tumbleweed · F
@Different Dem buttered biscuits & sweet tea!!
A type of beetle, possibly related to a box elder, whatever you do, do not sqush it. I accidently stepped on a box elder back in 2012, the next thing I knew I was invaded with hundreds of them overnight, within my apartment, it took me fhree weeks with a solution of super water diluted regular dawn dish soap to get rid of them, spraying them kills them within 10 seconds and they won't attract more, they're also known as stink bugs.

@NativePortlander1970 I've had a few run ins with stink bugs, their smell is horrendous & almost impossible to wash off 🤢 I was told that this bug is a spotted lanternfly..
@Tumbleweed Box elder bugs don't stink nearly as bad as actual stink bugs, but collectively in the hundreds they can get a bit odorous.
