Would you consider addiction to be a disease or a choice?

BigAssLeech · 31-35, M
Both. Addiction is a symptom of something else, either mental illness or physical illness, and it isn't always a choice. It should still be treated as a disease regardless of why it began though

@BigAssLeech that is the safest way to treat addiction. Safest for society as a whole I do believe.

It's a disease, and quite a complex and intricate one too. My birth mother did a lot of drugs while she was pregnant, resulting in me being born not only in an unstable condition but also with a multitude of disorders. However it's definitely safe to say I was lucky in terms of what could have happened.

According to my doctor due to being exposed to it before I was even born, and my body going through withdrawals from it in my early years, addiction to each and every one of the drugs I was exposed to runs in my blood. Not only that it is essentially guaranteed that I'd get addicted again due to genetics accounting for a much higher percentage of my vulnerability to addiction. As a result it isn't safe for me to take certain drugs that I was exposed to for medical use.

It's definitely not a choice for me, I was born addicted to something I had no choice in partaking in in the first place. As a result it's a disease that gave me a bunch of mental disorders I didn't ask for and it's a disease that exists inside my body and has made my life significantly harder.

The addiction itself is no choice. risking it may be a choice for some people, but even then not always

I don't believe the addiction is a choice... Though the starting point to the addiction certainly was

It’s a choice to take something like heroine that everyone knows it’s addictive
Bang5luts · M
@Catzgano the first time I do believe is a choice. I don't believe it stays that simple though. Then again I have never struggled with heroine or opiate addiction
Ontheroad · M
I consider it more of a mental/emotional disorder, certainly not a disease or choice.

An affliction (caused by behavior)
Not a disease
nedkelly · 61-69, M
I may put it down to a mental illness
Bang5luts · M
I don't think addiction is that cut and dry.

Addictions, at least some of them, seem to be diseases.
To get out of them impies choices.
A choice unless you are born of an addict, then it’s a disease.
After long enough it's a disease that once started as a choice

A very unfortunate choice that becomes a disease.
It's too complicated to box into one thing
Maybe both but it comes down to a choice.

Bang5luts · M
There are many different facets and levels of addiction and addictive behavior
Chickie · F
A choice, people just have no self control.
