Let me tell you - this was the first time I've ever done this AND it may be the first time she ever got a tip as a checkout lady because she looked surprised. I know they're under constant CCT observation so I was surprised she didn't say something like "Oh, we're not allowed to accept tips".

@MyMonstersAreReal Yeah I get that. I think some people are born to serve. I also think there's no higher endeavor than up serve others.
Problem comes when we don't serve ourselves. The urge to serve others doesn't go away but it turns dull and chore like.
Then you're like .. I gotta go help that motherf****r again.
And we end up like that sour lady at the social services office who started the job full of dreams and now feels like everybody is full of shit.
At some point you have to start doing the right thing for you. Does that make sense?
Just a thought.
So. Anyway... I think being there when needed is sometimes actually life saving and you should feel proud. But maybe you need to be there more for yourself.
I think.. but then again.. I'm just another SW talking head.
I broke my leg twice. Once hit by a forklift and just when it started to heal I got hit by a car rebreaking it.
I was in the middle of nowhere and had to walk like that until a young MAGA couple stopped and picked me up. I was almost dark and I was a 6 foot 4 inches guy limping down the road in blinding pain.
Many many people drove by, but they did the right thing and stopped.
You are like them and that's quite alright.

There have been times when I've been in a bad situation and those you expect to help suddenly find an excuse to disappear.
It's always that one quiet friend that you don't even see everyday who comes thru out of nowhere and saves your life.
They don't come with fireworks or parades. They come quietly, give you a hug, stick 500 dollars in your pocket and walk away leaving you standing there ashamed and almost in tears like a wet dog.
A friend that's there when no one else is. Is worth more than a hundred fun friends that never leave as long as things are good.

My mom used to do that.. she'd take me every Christmas eve to poor kids families ( mind you we were poor too ) and she'd have me give them the gifts. I used to hate it. I felt she MADE me do it. I didn't get it then.
I wish now we were still doing it.

I secretly get a big sense of accomplishment and specialness from it.
A child or an animal is not going to lie to you .
If they like you there must be something special about you that they can sense.
I have what I call the Luci test..
If my dog likes you, I like you. If she looks at you suspiciously and doesn't trust you, id be watching you too.
That means you have a good heart. And they see it.!! I'm sure everyone around you does.
