Say you and your kids stop at the ATM to pick up some cash. Say a man with a gun approaches you and want your cash. What do you think you would do? Or better yet if you have been in this position what did you do?
@SW-User I am trying to understand what is happening in the Ukraine. Most people just want to argue. So I thought this would be a good way to better understand how people would actually feel if it was them. Thank you for commenting.

As a parent..I think it is hard to not react for the here and now. My child is in danger now I will act now to protect them. @Dainbramadge
@SW-User hey that is a good point. I wasn't thinking about that option. Thank you for your input. Just using this to try to understand what's going on in the Ukraine.
If I’m in my car tell the kids to get down and drive off . If I’m on foot, tell my kids to run , toss the cash away from me and as run , when he stoops to pick it up I would draw and fire ( from cover if possible) .
@Darksideinthenight2 hes just lucky. He didnt know what a shitty driver he was messing with. There is no way im letting some fool in my vehicle to do whatever he wants.
@Coralmist I personally think they have chosen to fight and to attempt to keep their cash. That is why I was using this example. Are people just cheering the Ukraine on in hopes that they win an unwinnable war or do they actually think they have a chance.
@Dainbramadge Yes I think thats the mentality of the nation as a whole, we are fighting, youre not just taking. Its tough, now theres many variables that Im hearing, that Russia morale is low, ( soldiers. ) That the sanctions are beginning to have effect , and that they didnt expect them to stay and fight. But, on the other hand, I dont "know"...I do think they're outnumbered, and by weapons. I wonder too what others are viewing or believing about Ukraine. I truly hope it ends soon...kids lives now are at stake, and civilians killed...what will other nations DO?
@Coralmist to cut right to the Bone, that is where I am at. If everyone is so damn concerned about what happens in the Ukraine then why isn't anyone doing anything real. That is why I asked this question. To see what the mentality of most people would be if they were in the Ukraine shoes.
That's a tough one 🤔 if my kids are with me, I'd give up the money with no hassle. I ALWAYS have a gun on me but it's not worth putting them at risk. In a moment like that it's all about who shoots first & if his gun is already drawn then he has the advantage already because it's quicker for him to pull the trigger than it is for me to pull mine out from under my belt.
I've been in shootouts before so I have enough experience to say I'm capable of handling myself.. but I'd never put my kids through that if I can avoid it altogether
In the uk it would take someone pretty bloody stupid to do something like that as every atm has a camera and believe me when I say our streets have so much cctv he wouldnt get 100 yards . Not only that even at night there are so many people around and bouncers outside every club , pub and bar I wouldnt fancy his chances . Every terrorist shooting and stabbing etc the guy has either taken his own life or been caught before he got 5 yards . I would hand him the money and the minute he walked away start yelling and screaming .He wouldnt get to the end of the road .
I was mugged with a knife at my throat when I was 17. I handed over the money, and then spent decades feeling shamed because I didn't fight back -- comes from growing up in a John Wayne/macho ethos.
@ChipmunkErnie like I said I feel for you. Real men dig their own Graves often. There is absolutely no shame in living to fight another day. The only thing I can think of is the phrase a man's got to do what a man's got to do. Everyday you wake up is a day that you earned by acting like you did. Thanks for your honest comment.
I'm trained in boxing, wrestling and hand-to-hand combat. I could probably handle a guy with a knife, but if he has a gun I'd give him the money...especially with kids there.
@Dainbramadge I don't actually have kids but yeah for their safety I wouldn't mind losing money but if it was just me against a thief I'd fight and I'd kill.
@Lostpoet you know what's funny is this started out to see a more simplified answer about what is going on in the Ukraine. But after reading some of these answers I do have to wonder what I would do. The kids would make a huge difference I would hope. But like I have said in a few other of these comments I am kind of notorious for doing the exact wrong thing at the exact wrong time. LOL
This situation is not like that of Ukraine, in any way. Let's say, instead, that a group of 50 MS13 GANGS with weapons kills all the police and moves into your town and starts shooting everyone and killing your kids and pregnant women and murdering little babies.
@Dainbramadge If I am a woman with kids, RUN. If I am a single man, or if I knew how to fight and I had a weapon, I would stay and fight...just as the Ukrainian men are doing.
@4meAndyou I wasn't trying to start an argument. Just trying to understand. To be truthful I don't even know what I would do at the ATM. I kind of have a history of doing extremely stupid s*** at extremely bad times. I don't think Russia is just over there shooting everyone indiscriminately that you describe in your instance. I'm not saying they're not bombing places and killing kids and women. But overall it just keeps escalating. I just think the Ukraine should be thinking about the people that are needlessly dying trying to keep the cash they just got out of the ATM. Just my way of trying to simplify it so I can better understand it.
@Dainbramadge I watch video from Ukraine every single day, so, respectfully, I must say that you are not correct when you don't think Russians are over there shooting everyone indiscriminately.
I watched an father and his son go back to their home to try to get their dog, and the Russians opened fire on their car. The father fell down in the street, and died in his son's arms.
I watched and heard an elderly woman screaming as she sat in her parked car at the side of the road, and a Russian tank deliberately turned so that it could run over her car.
I learned that the Russians opened fire on a car carrying an American journalist, killing the journalist inside.
I would give them the money. If they did turn out to be extra psycho I would throw myself at them and scream for my kid to run into the nearest building, which, oddly enough, is a scenario I’ve discussed with my kid in “surviving a horror movie “half banter, half seriousness.
@WhateverWorks thank you for being honest. Sometimes it's hard to imagine yourself in a situation like that honestly. Yes protecting your children would always come before self preservation.
I only go to ATM’s that are drive up and leave the car in gear. I’d tell the kids to duck and I’d floor it. Either way we’re living and the guy will probably be dead or 50ft away on the ground.
@Dainbramadge I actually just switched banks because of this. All the drive up ATM’s were being closed around me due to branches being consolidated so I went elsewhere. My safety and convenience is paramount, not my loyalty, lol.
I have 24 years of martial arts training. If he is close to me I can take his gun off him.I know moves that can kill him.He will be dead before he hits the ground.

@tallpowerhouseblonde Why be a hero over some change? Why risk your own life or your kids for that matter over a slim chance of being a bad ass mom?
@SW-User If I cannot get close I would not risk it.But if he is up close I can put him down fast.He will not see it coming, especially if I sink my very long fingernails into his eyes and blind him.
@InHeaven that is kind of where I am at as well. I have a history of doing some pretty stupid stuff at stupid times. So I guess we would have to wait and see. Thank you for your honest comment.
@Entheesa that is a huge issue. What do you do when your kids are watching? I could only hope I would make the right decision if I were in that position.
@Spoiledbrat it is kind of a hard question for people that honest with their selves. And just using this to better understand the crap that's going on in the Ukraine right now. Thank you for your honesty.
@Forgetmeknot LOL. I am kind of in that boat as well. I know how I have acted in the past and I questioned my ability to make the right decision. Thank you for being honest.
@wildbill83 let me share my thoughts about carrying firearms. I think everybody should have one. That way some 90-year-old lady sees me getting mugged and she can drop the hammer on her ladysmith44 snub nose and bail me out. I'm not much of a quick draw. LOL
@Stereoguy they took care of the homeless vets here and they all have housing now. There was one on this side of the city who was asking for donations, he had a job but it wasn’t enough to pay for rent & bills. Someone got him some help.
