Did you know porcupines are HUGE?

Why did I think they were hedgehog size? They can get up to like 30lbs and 30 inches long. 😱

KristinaM · 36-40, F
@cherokeepatti It really is! 😆
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@KristinaM too bad they wreak such havock on trees.
pedrohedgerow · 61-69, M
@Tastyfrzz If we,humans,were to judged by our actions,porcupines would be pissing themselves at your comment ✌️
BlueVeins · 22-25
That's scary. You see one?
itsok · 31-35, F
@BlueVeins it is! i didn’t, i just looked up whether they’re in my area, and saw their measurements and couldn’t believe it. i wonder how many other animals are not at all the size i thought they were
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I did! They're common around here and you occasionally spot one by the roadside. They are enormous and adorable and waddly. I don't want my dogs meeting one but they're SO CUTE.

itsok · 31-35, F
@CountScrofula oh my gosh the way it waddles!
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@itsok SO CUTE
NotJamieM · 46-50, M
I've never got close enough to accurately gauge their size. I THINK I saw one from a distance on a hike once and hauled ass back down the trail, lol.
Dainbramadge · 56-60, M
I accidentally shot one out of a tree once when I was young.
In the failing light, from the back in the tree it looked just like a Coon.
The closer it got to the ground after I shot it the less it looked that way.
I had to carry it back to camp to see what we should do with it.
I tied a rope to it's tail, not a small task, and carried it back.
I kept looking down at it and could see how damn cute they are.
I didn't try but they look like they could be pet on their bellies.
Deadish · 31-35, M
Yup! Seen some horrible pictures of what happens to dogs who try to mess with them 😕
Dshhh · M
africans ones are even bigger
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Dshhh African porcupines are beautiful.
Dshhh · M
@cherokeepatti animals are the best...
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Dshhh they had one at a small country zoo east of my city and she loved to eat acorns from the nearby oak trees. They would also feed her pumpkin and other such foods.

@CereBellum so true..
itsok · 31-35, F
@Ingwe do you get them in your area? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one
Ingwe · F
@itsok Yes we get them but not in the numbers we used to
with their spikes out they are the size of a medium size dog like a bullterrier
I think I did. they also have barbs on their quills that encourage them to keep going inwards and they're known to shake a bit, making their quills fly a little way, which gave people the notion that the porcupines could 'shoot' them at will.
deadgerbil · 22-25, F
Their quills can kill a lion or leopard too

I’ve never seen one that I can recall. Something that size that can launch quills ...doesn’t sound like anything I want to deal with..
Yes, you can feed a party of four on one for a few days.
itsok · 31-35, F
@FrosinStjarna do people eat porcupines? 👀
@itsok Only in emergency situations, as far as I know. Porky and beans fills a hole. Plus, they are the only animals that come complete with toothpicks.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@itsok Yes...some do
lovebcups · 61-69, M
And if you have Dogs they think they are chew toys and will repeativly get a face full of quills.
That’s big. 😳
itsok · 31-35, F
@DarkHeaven i did, a couple of weeks ago
@itsok It’s beautiful. 😊🖤🤗
itsok · 31-35, F
@DarkHeaven thank you 🤗
Crazychick · 36-40, F
We don't have porcupines where I live so I don't really know.
itsok · 31-35, F
@Crazychick we don’t have them either
Oh, yeah...they are like a groundhog ("woodchuck") with quills, bigger than skunks...
Allelse · 36-40, M
Yeah they're great big buggers. I wouldn't want to mess with one.
MrGoodbar · 51-55, M
they are beavers with in home security system
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Yes they do get to be quite a size. Oh and stabby. 😁
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I’ve seen them in zoos, they didn’t look all that big but if you were expecting a hedgehog size yeah they’d be big. Raccoons can get up to 75 pounds although 20 pounds is normal. There is one that escaped from a truck in November and it weighs 50 pounds. It got loose and got pregnant and had babies here.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Yes have seen them in zoos
meJess · F
A cross between a pig and a tree?
masterofyou · 70-79, M
Yes please stay away from them...😉
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
They aren’t hedgehogs.
Dolimyte · 41-45, M
Indeed
https://similarworlds.com/215541-I-Love-Nature/3604918-This-is-my-neighbour-His-name-is-prickle-he-lives
TexChik · F
Yep . We have issues with them around our stock ... they don’t survive for long if we see one at the farm
lovebcups · 61-69, M
And a dog will never learn to leave them alone and get their faces full of quills
Slade · 56-60, M
Is that why Ron Jeremy was called the hedgehog?🤔
Nomad7 · 22-25, M
You've tried picking one up? 🤨
itsok · 31-35, F
@Nomad7 i’m not that desperate yet
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Have lots of them in Minnesota.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Tastyfrzz the boy saw one on Thanksgiving in a rural area when we were driving somewhere. I didn’t get to see it because we had passed it when he told me
Yes, I knew they were pretty big.
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
Hello my SW Groupie
Cowboybob · M
Who would know that?
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
So, not cudddly? 🤔
Pretzel · 61-69, M
No, I didn’t. It just occurred to me that I’ve never actually seen one in rl. I assumed they were small, too.
TJNewton · M
Did you know crocodiles can grow up to 40 feet ? normally they have 4
itsok · 31-35, F
@TJNewton 😏
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@TJNewton That’s lots of handbags 😂
TJNewton · M
@Dlrannie Lol beautiful for goodness sake check your pms 😂😂😘
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
Yes I knew this
DDonde · 31-35, M
yeah they're pretty chill
caesar7 · 61-69, M
We see them often at the cottage....they are huge! My dog back in the day charged at one in the garden and got quills in her mouth...we had to use pincers to remove them...she yelped alot while removing them...it must of really hurt..poor mutt :(
itsok · 31-35, F
@caesar7 oh that’s awful😣 they are bigger than my dogs
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@itsok They are...and they don't seem to be afraid much. I wouldn't either if I was covered with that kind of protection..lol Sheba, the name of the dog, had quills in her gums and nose....itwasn't just one to remove so she had to endure the pain when we removed them. It was very difficult to handle her...couldn't blame her.
tenente · 100+, M
The final boss 🤔
