I Have Social Phobia

I didn't go to the Wednesday lunch yoga class held by a colleague today, and maybe for a while in the future too. I do not have common topic to talk with them during lunch after we finish class together. And I have different political views from theirs. Rather than facing situations like this, I prefer to be alone.

So because of diffrent political opinions, you want to detach yourself from your collegues? That's some hardcore identity issues right there.

@Kwek00 imagine living in a free world with access to information and knowledge of how other countries work, how would it be like when this access to information is suddenly blocked? Imagine if your election is fake, you vote but the pro-gov candidates bribe the elderly voters by giving them gifts and the money is given by the government, so no matter how many times you vote you don't get to vote out the candidates who are not doing their jobs; and the government is not working for the good of the general public, but only for groups of rich people and people in power to rule.

I agree on your bad governement analogy. That's also why I don't understand the entire "Long live Wakanda" meme as a good example of African governement. Since Wakanda (in Black Panther) actually got fucked over the moment a bad king took it's place. The story also moves an already romantic vieuw of a monarchy to a more "free society" where things can be discussed at the end of the movie, even tough people are still not free and it's still a monarch and people are okay with it because the king now at least takes care of it's people. So things will change again in the future when shit hits the fan.

I totally agree with you... That's also why (on the HK - China thing) I'm on your side. However... if you want emphathy from me, you should also consider that people growing up in such an authoritarian system accept this system as being "good" (maybe not all of them, but as your father there are manny more that will argue the chinese system is a good thing) and they have their own values into why this is considered good.

The only thing that I said, is that we should not romantise liberal-democracies. Because the reason why people loose faith into liberal-democracies is that the romantic view certain people hold doesn't live up to the reality they are living. And once people get dissilusioned, they vote for authoritarian leaders to give them a chance. (like hitler and mussolini who - altough never getting a real majority - got into governement by democratic ellections). We should understand that these systems are not perfect, because we are not perfect, and democracy should represent us. If you want to better democracy, you need to better yourself and understand that you need to make time and work on trying to be informed and make descisions that are good according to you. And you need to tolerate if others make other decisions. Getting all negative about it, makes people vote for those that harvest these negative emotions and turn it into something that might turn into a nightmare.

@Kwek00 for people growing up under authoritarian rule, it s ok they think it s good for them. But the sad thing is, they are disturbing us here. It s ok they stay the same as they are, but do not try to change us, and blame us for being different. And this authoritarian idea that they have is so rigid that, no one in the world could enlighten them to be a bit open minded to other possibilities.

I agree with you that we need to spend lots of time and effort to keep improving ourselves, keep informed and be a better person to exercise just decision and be fair. Honestly, I'd rather spend time and effort bettering myself, than rely on luck or ungaranteed hope that an authoritarian government is going to improve. It s easier to change and improve yourself, than to hope others would change.

Maybe just excuse yourself, say that your not comfortable talking about ploitics? I can see why not having common topic might be awkward though. Maybe you can find a way to steer the convo to a topic your familiar with?

I find that having lunch alone is great. I have never felt it very uplifting or liberating sitting with colleagues and talking about school things. I think we have to be comfortable being by ourselves and others must also respect that privacy.

It is the best thing to do. If you do not enjoy lunch and want to avoid discussions, better leave.
I imagine political discussions in HK have reached a level when it is hard to keep them civil.

Try to take baby steps and challenge yourself, and talk to a therapist if you can't achieve your goals.

@SW-User I am often questioned whether I have a group of lunch buddies, I m annoyed being questioned. If you say no you eat alone, people think you have problems.
