Running in the Corridor

When we were in 6th form a friend and I were chasing her brother along a corridor and got stopped by a teacher. We were taken to his classroom where we all had to bend over for six with the slipper.

I remember getting whacked with a slipper for walking on the wrong side of the corridor.
jackcros · 70-79, M
@Sharon recent research seems to show that, on average, males have a better sense of direction than females, you were unlucky to be slippered for going the wrong way.
Sharon · F
@jackcros I knew which way I was going, I just didn't worry about the rules.
jackcros · 70-79, M
@Sharon your compass was set fair for slippering
RhondasMum · 61-69, F
Six hurt.
One was a warning
Two a warming
Three began to hurt
Four was a gasper
Five brought tears
Six and you walked stiff legged and sat very carefully.
RhondasMum · 61-69, F
@Lynda70 Yes, I agree. The larger numbers were less usual in the class - but if one was summoned to a teacher's study, or even the teachers' common room, it was for a proper slippering and we were lucky if it was less than six.
smacked30D · 70-79, M
@RhondasMum I can well remember getting a couple of dozen whacks of my father's slipper bent across his knee !! My trousers and pants having been dispensed with !
miscreant6x6 · 56-60, M
@RhondasMum Very succinct and very true.
Colin713 · 70-79, M
I was at a school reunion and as the school orchestra played light airs from Gilbert and Sullivan and sausage rolls were carried round by the sixth year pupils, and the head was there being cheerful , an elderly lady approached him . She presented him with the tawse which her grandfather had stolen when a boy in the first half of the last century. The head swished it around and there was much fruity heh heh ing as grey haired former pupils made knowing chuckles. All very stirring!
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Did you ever catch the brother? I once got into trouble for running in the school corridor. I had to spend my lunch break 'practising' how to walk at a normal pace 🙄
Lynda70 · F
@SunshineGirl Not really, we were all stopped by the teacher who slippered us.
StrictOldManUK · 70-79, M
Back in the day schools had that as an effective deterrent. No more alas.
Sharon · F
@StrictOldManUK It's effectiveness is highly questionable.
StrictOldManUK · 70-79, M
@Sharon I know many will disagree but I can only go on my own experience and comparison between then and now.
Colin713 · 70-79, M
In Scotland the usual instrument of scholarly encouragement was a piece of leather made from the skin of an extremely tough cow. Normally applied to the hands with the whole class watching in avid silence. Gym
teachers were the most enthusiastic and sometimes used the slipper. One of the perks of the job maybe !
Amazing to imagine that was still part of normal life thirty years ago.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
We may disagree, but, i think there is no place for corporal punishment. It has never proven to work as a deterrent.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Sharon Maybe, it is in my definition of sexual frustration, maybe they just "hate" boys, not that they want to see the penises.
smacked30D · 70-79, M
@samueltyler2 My father's slipper certainly worked on me !!
Sharon · F
@samueltyler2 They definitely had some ulterior, illegitimate, motive.
Colin713 · 70-79, M
Only the prefects used the slipper (a huge floppy one and very uncomfortable). Teachers used the belt/strap/tawse which i suppose was quicker.
Sharon · F
@SW-User I've known prefects to make things up to get boys and girls caned.

Sharon · F
@SW-User Yes, it was only a few who made things up. Others often turned a blind eye to our activities.
Flower11 · 61-69, M
At the boys private I attended in the early 1970s the masters continued to punish us with the slipper when the occasion demanded in the lower sixth form for a number of matters. We had no expectation of anything different from earlier years.
smacked30D · 70-79, M
Did you manage to keep your navy blue knickers on ? Or were they lowered ?

Lynda70 · F
@smacked30D Yes, quite often.
StrictOldManUK · 70-79, M
@Lynda70 How splendid, I have never been a fan of those 'big' regulation ones.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
In the sixth?

Where I come from (south of England) I can't remember anyone receiving corporal punishment after about 1965 when I was in primary school and even then I think it was only in primary that it happened.

What part of the country were you in?

When I was in the sixth form we got much worse punishments; the headmistress would give us a good talking to. She had a very sharp tongue but was scrupulously observant and fair which only made it worse somehow because you knew you deserved it.
Lynda70 · F
@ninalanyon East Anglia. Practices varied widely, even in different schools in the same area.
TheThinker · 56-60, M
@Lynda70 I can vouch for that. I went to a boys' grammar school in West Essex where the cane was very rarely used - the "nuclear option", if you will. (Apparently the previous Head had been very cane-happy but he retired two years before I got there in 1976.)

However I found out a few years later that our sister girls' grammar a couple of miles away had been very cane-happy right up to abolition.

Likewise, an acquaintance of mine who lived just over the county border, in Hertfordshire, went to a boys' grammar that was also fond of the cane.

It varied a lot.

That sounds a bit excessive! Nasty!
helensusanswift · 31-35, F
@Sharon I smiled at that - I would not have smiled if I had been the owner of said bottom!
Lynda70 · F
@Sharon They're the type of lines I often got too.
@Sharon One of the really fun puns!
Docdon23 · M
My guess is this is no longer the practice...seems some charges of abuse or even pedophilia might occur now...
Lynda70 · F
@Docdon23
there are ways to discipline children without inflicting physical pain.
Some schools exempted girls so they knew that already. Therefore teachers in those schools must have had some ulterior motive for beating boys.

In 6th form? How old are you? I was in the sixth in 1972-1974 in southern England and neither the chasing nor the slipper were a feature of my life. We were expected to set an example of good behaviour for the 4th and 5th formers.

We would have been reported to the deputy head and she would have made our lives considerably more miserable than corporal punishment would have by expressing her disapproval.
Colin713 · 70-79, M
Queuing up to get whacked was never nice. If you were first it sort of passed in a blur. But further down the queue it felt worse and worse. Did you have to wait outside or were you all there watching the executions?
Lynda70 · F
@Colin713 We were all in the room together.
CPChris · 70-79, M
Was your friend's brother watching as the two of you got the slipper? Was it done over your skirts? How did you all have to bend over for it? Was that the only time you got the slipper at school?
Lynda70 · F
@CPChris We were all slippered together so we saw each other get it. We had to lift our skirts and bend touching toes. I got the slipper loads of times at school.
Andys · 51-55, M
@Lynda70 Did the boys have to lower their trousers?
Lynda70 · F
@Andys Yes.
smacked30D · 70-79, M
Well you deserved it , maybe not 6 strokes but certainly 3 !! At that age you should have known better, serves you right !
Lynda70 · F
@smacked30D We got 6 because we were habitual offenders and, as you say, should have known better at that age. The slipper wasn't used much in 6th form but, when it was, we usually got 6.
smacked30D · 70-79, M
@Lynda70 Was it given on your skirt or was that lifted out of the way ?
Lynda70 · F
@smacked30D I was wearing trousers that time but skirts were usually lifted out of the way.
Colin713 · 70-79, M
did the girls get it as hard as the boys?
Lynda70 · F
@Colin713 Yes,
Colin713 · 70-79, M
Being in sixth form must have been an added burden. No longer a bouncy pupil more of a you g woman. A bit old for bending over. I don’t think i remember any CP after about fifteen or so. Except one time a boy in sixth got really leathered hard by the head.
Lynda70 · F
@Colin713 As 6th formers at school we were still seen as "schoolchildren", If we had been at a 6th form college or at work we should have been treated as adults. I wouldn't say we were a bit old for bending over though.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
Our headmaster used to grope our arses before applying the cane. He was checking that we didn't have a textbook down the back of our trousers. If we did then he would cane the very top of our legs just below the arse.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Sharon Guess it was just the way of the school system in the late 70s,early 80s here.
Sharon · F
@Entwistle I'm still pretty sure it was because they were perverts. The fact that they had other methods available, that they used with girls, should have been obvious to even the most stupid teacher. The historic abuse cases, most involving boy victims, tend to support that.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@Sharon I agree with you.
