@Entwistle Really? The were a lot of perverts in teaching.

@Sharon Yeah that's my view too. There had to be two teachers present during the canings. One to administer the cane and the other to be a witness so the pupil couldn't accuse him of groping in a perverted way. The punishment always happened in the heads office. Girls weren't caned in my school.

@Entwistle So they must have had some other way of dealing with seriously misbehaving girls. They could have used those same methods with boys so they must have had some ulterior motive for choosing to beat boys. The only reasonable explanation is that they were abusive perverts.

@Sharon I think it was because only male teachers dished out the canings. It would definitely have been seen as perverted (and rightly so) to have men in their 60s caning schoolgirls.

@Entwistle That could be why they didn't cane girls, it doesn't explain why they did cane boys when they obviously had other methods of keeping order.

In any case, they could have got female teachers to cane the girls.

@Sharon Guess it was just the way of the school system in the late 70s,early 80s here.

@Entwistle I'm still pretty sure it was because they were perverts. The fact that they had other methods available, that they used with girls, should have been obvious to even the most stupid teacher. The historic abuse cases, most involving boy victims, tend to support that.
