Why is a tomato classed as a fruit when we treat it like a vegetable?

ArishMell · 70-79, M
It is a fruit because it develops and holds the plant's seeds - so are, for example, marrows, cucumbers, pea and bean pods.

It is only culinary practice that classes these as "vegetables".
I have seen a fruit seller selling tomatoes. 😅

Isn't it cos 'vegetable' isn't a scientific classification so any edible plant primarily used in savoury food a vegetable, I think scientifically, fruits hold seeds so courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins would all be fruits AND vegetables.

@Crazychick that's how we got coffee and chocolate :)
SW-User
@Crazychick to be honest, you're not missing much with this fruit though imho
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@SW-User Probably not. Lol :)

Tomato used to be slang for an attractive girl, as in "She's a hot tomato."
It makes tomato ketchup a smoothie.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@FairyGirlGemma Exactly. Ketchup isn't supposed to be a smoothie.

I think it's because of the seeds
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@meJess In that case all fruit and vegetables should be classified according to taste.
meJess · F
@Crazychick That's one way of doing it, but I think they are classified on whether they have seeds on the inside or not
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@meJess That just confuses people. I prefer it when black is black and white is white. When the two mix they have a nasty way of turning each other grey. Who wants that?
It IS a fruit because of how it grows.

The USDA (US Dep't. of Agriculture) has this info at https://www.ars.usda.gov/northeast-area/beltsville-md-barc/beltsville-agricultural-research-center/genetic-improvement-for-fruits-vegetables-laboratory/docs/tomato-facts/
Though botanically a fruit, in 1893 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the tomato was a vegetable (NIX v. HEDDEN, 149 U.S. 304). The import tax placed on vegetables (but not fruits) protected U.S. tomato growers from foreign markets.
Please allow me to apologize for this and for Trump.

@MartinII I understood that tomatoes are nightshades, just like potatoes, and the unripe fruit is not very healthy.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Crazychick As Helen has explained, they come from the same family as deadly nightshade. Of course they are not really poisonous, though I do know a naturopath who thinks they, and potatoes, can be toxic. I’m not sure how many real tomatoes there are in ketchup, but that’s a separate question!
helenS · 36-40, F
@MartinII Ketchup is mainly sugar syrup, spiced up with some tomatoes.
helenS · 36-40, F
Depends on whether you are a botanist or a nutritionist I think. Tomatoes are fruits that are considered to be vegetables by nutritionists.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@helenS In that case, botanists are weird. Thank goodness I don't personally know any. Lol :)
helenS · 36-40, F
@Crazychick To a botanist, strawberries are nuts.
The strawberry has seeds that are on the outside of the fruit and not on the inside as in most fruits (surrounded by flesh and the seeds in the middle). By the same logic, raspberries and blueberries are also nuts.

In fact botanists are nuts 😁
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@helenS You can say that again! Lol :)
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
To inspire the real vegetables?
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@VeronicaPrincess What do you mean? Lol :)
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
@Crazychick Tomatoes taste great fresh from the garden! Most other vegetables require a bit more preparation to enhance their palatability.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@VeronicaPrincess I see what you mean, but why do we eat tomatoes with vegetably things and not with fruity things? That's the main point of my question.
StrictSouthernHOH · 46-50, M
A tomato has seeds inside it. That makes it a fruit.

Anything directly potable is considered a fruit. Cucumber is considered a fruit too. Some are considered a fruit, after it ripens and a vegetable before.
Ian123 · 61-69, M
I think they are classified as a fruit because they contain seeds. Not positive about this though I may be wrong 😀
UncleJlovesbrazil · 61-69, M
It has seeds as a fruit bur its nutritional value is that of a vegetable!
