ask the European royal families... they have the most experience with that topic... 🤔
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@wildbill83 Pakistan has a high level of cousin marriages and they also have a great number of babies born with serious birth defects. Many of those families will continue to have one baby after another even knowing they’ll have more children with birth defects. I watched a video that a Pakistani woman made about it.

Most countries allow marriage to first cousins.
It has been said that the chances of passing hereditary genes containing potential defects is greater but modern research indicates the likelihood is something nearer 25% rather than the previously thought 80%

@Picklebobble2 Important to note that this figure is still misleading.
The chance of passing potential defects is only greater because if both parents carry a defect then it becomes likely that the child has a much greater chance to inherit that defect. Sickle cell is one such fairly common genetic defect that is proliferated by cousin marriage.
But what most people are asking about is the increased risk of genetic anomaly caused by incest.
Currently the average child is subject to a 3-4% chance of random birth defects.
This becomes 4-7% in a child of 1st cousin marriage.

Yes. Though not in the US.

Not from a genetic point of view, apparently. Here's an article from 2004 about it.

No not by historical, most religious or many cultural standards.
It lost favor within the Western World within the last 100 years.
Worldwide more than 10% of marriages are still between 1st or 2nd cousins.
