Why do laptop makers all seem to put the cooling vents on the underneath?

It's stoopid.

You can pick up a cooling fan for a couple bucks...they actually work pretty well.
This is a fancy one - but you can buy them anywhere cheap and they do work!

@FairyGirlGemma I've had the same one that's outlasted 3 laptops....and if anyone ever asks "did you get into some kind of computer nerd talk with FG Gemma"...I'll deny it! :) Have a great weekend!
@luctoretemergo Thanks, you too!!

@luctoretemergo In my experience (but I suppose it varies from laptop to laptop) those things do little in terms of lowering the internal temperature. Sure the bottom feels cooler at touch but in general if you have overheating issues (like abrupt shutdowns, or in modern machines, performance loss) those usually don't help much.

On the other hand, as hilarious as it may sound, with my current laptop all I needed to fix the overheating issues was a simple 0.70€ eraser cut in four pieces

well you cant put it on the top cause the keyboard is there. if you put it on the sides then the laptop has to be bigger to alow airflow. I think they expect customers to use them certain way. Like keep it on a flat, dry surface.
They just want us to have to buy a new laptop quicker. 😠
@SensitiveCha0s LMAO! 🐑
@FairyGirlGemma OMG that sheep is a definite improvement
@SensitiveCha0s Yeah it's almost porn for Welsh people now!

Inlets on the bottom and outlets on the sides, usually. At least any and every laptop I've ever had to open/clean/repaste
@Elessar Mine's got the exhaust on the hinge by the bottom of the screen
Elessar · 26-30, M
@FairyGirlGemma Ah yes, I've seen a few laptops designed like that!
GermanAf · 26-30, M
Most are on the side though :0
@GermanAf It's a Lenovo 81MT according to Windows
GermanAf · 26-30, M
@FairyGirlGemma i retract my earlier statement! i wasn't aware that there are none thinkpad Lenovo models lol. sorry
@GermanAf Yeah I've got the cheapo version!

Because on top, there's the keyboard
@SW-User Yeah but there's the sides! Could suck air in one side and blow it out the other, or the back no?

@FairyGirlGemma it would require making an air tube taking the whole width of the laptop to pass it from one side to the other! 🤔 That can be an inefficient use of the volume inside the laptop unless the cross-sectional area of that tube is very little, but that wouldn't be efficient for cooling soo... 🤷‍♂️

I use a laptop stand and I'm using a Lenovo, my laptop's bottom is as cool as cucumber as a result.
@AntisocialTroll That's about how long i get out of mine and yeah I think it's the heat. This one is about a year old now, so it's time for me to start saving up for a new one, so when this dies it's not an unexpected bill like when my last one packed up - or maybe get a refurbed better model? The bit of the case where the hinge fits on has cracked so I'm not confident it'll last too long 😱
I'll give the stand a go though, it can't hurt!!
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
@FairyGirlGemma I'm always a bit wary of refurbished stuff unless I know the previous owner, I worry it'll die a day after the 3 or 6 month warranty runs out as I've had that happen on the only 2 refurbs I've had! So since then I've always gone for an el cheapo jobby instead and now try to always have 2 so if one dies I don't lose my connection to the rest of the world.
@AntisocialTroll Yeah that's a worry, especially as everything is online now!
I don't know what I'll do yet, as long as it will play some games and do the Internet that's all I care about.

To keep you warm when working on the PC.

If it vents out from bottom, it's not a good design.
I like them under the keys myself😏
@canusernamebemyusername My Horrible Products ones had that.
@FairyGirlGemma That... Is impressive actually.
@canusernamebemyusername Yeah it actually worked pretty well. If the screen was well designed, it would have been a good computer - but the hinges snapped and took out the panel.
