Why do laptop makers all seem to put the cooling vents on the underneath?

Inlets on the bottom and outlets on the sides, usually. At least any and every laptop I've ever had to open/clean/repaste

@Elessar Mine's got the exhaust on the hinge by the bottom of the screen
